Happy Canada Day!

We hope you celebrate safely and remember to keep your pets inside during the festivities.

Fireworks are terrifying to the vast majority of pets. This is one of the Ottawa Humane Societyā€™s busiest times of year for lost pets for this reason.

We are closed today, but open for regular hot the rest of the week.

*Heartworm positive case*

Yesterday one of our RVTs noticed a suspicious suspect in a routine peripheral blood smear. The blood sample was sent to the lab and confirmed that the dog is heartworm positive.

The dog was confirmed to have not travelled outside the Ottawa area, so it was contracted in the city. Heartworm isnā€™t abundant in the area, but this is a reminder that it is still very much present in the community.

We donā€™t require 4dx tests (which tests for heartworm and 3 tick diseases) if the pet isnā€™t getting heartworm medication. This is a good reminder as to why we recommend annual heartworm prevention as well as flea and tick.
