Choosing the right horse feed shouldn’t come down to the prettiest bag or the highest protein percentage.

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect, Dr. Dan Carter and equine nutritionist Dr. Kelly Vineyard talk through what horse owners should actually be looking at when choosing a feed, from feed tags, forage quality and calories to carbohydrates, supplements, feeding rates and the individual needs of the horse.

Because good equine nutrition isn’t about making a feed program more complicated. It’s about understanding your horse, your forage and what the rest of the diet truly needs to provide.

We 💜 some Arthramid Equine!

Arthramid® is an injectable hydrogel used to manage joint pain and osteoarthritis in horses. Unlike corticosteroids, it integrates into the joint’s synovial membrane, providing biomechanical support that helps improve elasticity, reduce stiffness and enhance joint function.

More than 80% of horses remain lameness-free following one injection, making Arthramid® an exciting option for long-term joint support— even for some horses that have not responded well to conventional treatments.

Could Arthramid® be right for your horse? Talk with one of our veterinarians to learn more! 🐴💜

There are a LOT of options when it comes to horse boots and leg wraps, and probably just as many opinions about what they actually do.

Bell boots, splint boots, tendon boots, sports medicine boots, polo wraps, ice boots… they all have a purpose, but that purpose may not always be what we’ve been told. One of the biggest misconceptions? That wrapping or booting a horse’s legs automatically provides tendon and ligament support or prevents soft tissue injuries.

In this episode, Dr. Dan Carter and Dr. Regan White talk through the different types of horse boots and leg wraps, when they’re useful, how heat and fit come into play, and even why automatically reaching for the ice boots after every ride may be worth reconsidering.

At the end of the day, it really comes back to one question: Why are you putting that boot on your horse?

Ever seen a horse with fangs? 🦷

Not really, but this guy had some gnarly hooks on his upper first cheek teeth (106 and 206)!

Dr. Underwood got this 6-year-old stallion’s teeth floated, likely for the first time in his life. Because he is also parrot-mouthed, his teeth do not meet and wear evenly, making consistent dental care especially important.

Bonus points if you can spot his wolf teeth! 👀

👍🏼 All thumbs up at Countryside today!

You know it’s going to be a good week when you kick it off with Dr. Underwood and Dr. White performing a little “brain surgery” on a stallion— and Gracie, our newest equine vet assistant, absolutely *slaying* her first The Franklin-Williams Company RediRoll™ support bandage!

Sometimes a “grumpy” horse isn’t being difficult. They’re trying to tell you something.

In this episode of The Equine Vet Connect, Dr. Dan Carter and Dr. Caroline Brown dig into the many reasons a horse’s behavior or performance can suddenly change, from gastric ulcers and chronic pain to sore feet, saddle fit, vision problems, muscle disorders, and lameness.

Before writing off bucking, spooking, resistance, irritability, or poor performance as a training problem, hormone issue, or “just their personality,” it may be worth asking why the behavior changed in the first place.

We can’t explain how satisfying it is when the tooth *finally* comes out! Unfortunately, this tooth was broken and the root was retained so we had to go retrieve it from deeper below the gums. We then take x-rays to ensure no fragments are left behind that could potentially cause an abscess.

EDIT TO ADD: This patient could not feel any pain during the extraction. They are given NSAIDs before and after the procedure as well as IV sedation and nerve blocks around the tooth (just like your dentist does). His head moving around is not from trying to avoid pain; they can only feel pressure from the procedure.

There’s a lot more to a mounted patrol unit than simply putting an officer on a horse.

We had the privilege of sitting down with Lt. Colonel Tim Brown and Stable Master Abigail Jordan of the Cobb County Sheriff's Office Mounted Patrol to talk about what goes into selecting, training, and caring for these incredible horses, and the officers who work alongside them. From crowd management and patrols to community outreach, these horses have a pretty remarkable job.

One thing that really comes through in this conversation is just how much these horses are valued as members of the team. We’re incredibly proud to play a small part in keeping them healthy and doing what they do best. We would like to also thank City of Atlanta Police Department, Memphis Police Department est.1827, and Savannah Police Department for serving alongside CCSO Mounted Patrol during the FIFA World Cup games in Atlanta. Thank you for all you do to keep our cities safe!
