Fireworks and loud gatherings may be fun for us, but for pets, they can be scary and confusing.

Every year around the Fourth of July, shelters see a dramatic rise in lost pets who’ve run off during celebrations.

A microchip is one of the simplest and most effective ways to help make sure your pet always finds their way back home. It’s quick, it’s safe, and it lasts a lifetime.

A female cat can become pregnant as young as 4 months old and have 2-3 litters a year! That’s why it’s important to spay and neuter your pets, community cats, and any kittens you’re caring for! Neutering kittens is safe as soon as they are 8 weeks old and weigh 2 pounds. alleycat.org/PediatricSpayNeuter

June is National Pet Preparedness Month, and it’s the time of year when natural disasters strike more frequently. Although you should be prepared for pet emergencies all year, this month serves as a good reminder to go over your family’s emergency plans and make sure your pets are included.
While no one can truly be fully prepared for a disaster, a well-thought-out and versatile strategy can make a significant difference.
Are you ready in the event of a disaster?

Please schedule to have your pets up to date for the rabies vaccine. It is also GA law.

Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement and the GNR Public Health Department announced a raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Officials said a raccoon attacked a dog near Biltmore Oaks Drive in Bethlehem of the county on May 26. Please use caution and avoid animals behaving in unusual ways.

The best way to keep your pets safe is to ensure that they're current on rabies vaccination. Rabies can spread to people and pets through a bite or scratch.

When the raccoon was tested on Sunday for rabies, results showed it had the virus.

Pet owners should ensure their pets are up to date on vaccinations.

If you believe you’ve been exposed to rabies, contact GNR Public Health at 770-339-4260 and ask for the on-call epidemiologist.

If you think you’ve seen an animal behaving in an unusual way and have picked it up, contact the Gwinnett Animal Welfare and Enforcement Bite Office at 770-339-3200, ext. 5576.

If you or your child have been bitten or scratched by any stray animals or an animal suspected of having rabies, preventive treatment for rabies is necessary. If you believe you've been exposed, immediately seek medical care and let them know you were exposed. Then, contact the Gwinnett County Health Department at 770.339.4260 and ask for the epidemiologist on call.

To report the animal and have it picked up, please call the Gwinnett Animal Welfare and Enforcement Bite Office at 770.339.3200 ext. 5576; after hours, contact Dispatch non-emergency at 770.513.5700.

Health officials say if you see an animal acting strangely, do not approach it.

Just a reminder as summer heat begins, please know if your dog is a breed who can quickly be overcome by the heat resulting in a heat stroke.
