𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪… 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗦𝗨𝗡𝗕𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗢𝗢? ☀️🐶

Yep. Apparently Queensland sunshine doesn’t care how cute you are.

Dogs can get sunburnt, and some are much more vulnerable than others. Dogs with white or pale skin, thin or sparse coats, hairless breeds and pets with exposed areas of skin can be particularly susceptible.

And it’s not always the furry bits you need to think about. The nose, ear tips, belly, groin and other areas where the coat is thin can get plenty of sun exposure, especially in dogs who consider lying belly-up in a patch of blazing sunshine an important part of their daily schedule.

Repeated UV exposure matters too. Just like us, ongoing sun damage can affect the skin over time, so prevention is much better than waiting until you notice redness, tenderness, crusting or changes to the skin.

Shade and avoiding long periods outside during the strongest part of the day are simple places to start. If you must, talk to your vet about a pet-appropriate sunscreen. Don’t automatically reach for the human sunscreen in the bathroom cupboard because some ingredients aren’t suitable for pets, particularly when licking is involved.

And yes, we know. You can provide three shady areas, a cool floor and a perfectly good bed, and some dogs will still locate the one rectangle of direct sunlight and roast themselves like a potato. 😂

You know the sigh.

They’ve been fed. They’ve been walked. They’ve had cuddles, snacks and access to multiple beds they refuse to use because apparently your couch is better.

Then they flop down beside you and let out the deepest, most emotionally exhausted sigh imaginable.

Mate. You have no job. What exactly has worn you out? 😂

The good news is that a big doggy sigh is often perfectly normal. Dogs can sigh when they’re relaxed and settling down, especially when that sigh comes with a loose body, soft face and those slowly closing eyes.

Sometimes it can also be communication. Your dog may sigh when they’ve given up waiting for you to throw the ball, share your dinner or finally understand that staring at the leash means WALK. NOW.

As always, context matters. A sigh by itself is one thing. Frequent or unusual sighing alongside restlessness, changes in breathing, coughing, reluctance to move, reduced appetite or behaviour that simply isn’t normal for your dog deserves more attention.

So yes, your dog may genuinely be communicating something.

Or they may simply be devastated that dinner was 11 minutes ago and nobody has organised second dinner.

𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗢𝗢… 𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘? 🌧️🐶

There are dogs who love the rain, dogs who tolerate the rain, and then there are dogs who step outside, feel one drop of water on a paw and immediately decide that toileting is no longer medically necessary. 😂

You open the back door and they take one look at the wet grass, one look at you, then back at the wet grass as though you’ve suggested something completely unreasonable. Meanwhile, you’re standing there in your pyjamas saying, “Go wees! Go on! QUICKLY!” with the enthusiasm of someone trying to negotiate an international peace treaty.

It’s not necessarily stubbornness. Dogs can develop surprisingly strong preferences about where they toilet, including the surface under their feet, familiar smells, location and even the weather. If they’re accustomed to dry grass, a soggy backyard can suddenly become deeply unacceptable.

For most healthy dogs, the occasional rainy-day standoff is just one of those ridiculous parts of living with them. But if your dog suddenly starts avoiding toileting, strains or repeatedly tries without producing much, seems uncomfortable, has accidents indoors, or their normal toilet habits change, that’s different and worth paying attention to.

Now we need to hear from the wet-weather negotiators. Does your dog brave the rain, demand an umbrella, or hold on with the determination of an Olympic athlete? 😂
