Did you know that dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs and cats? By the age of three, most pets show signs of dental disease, often without obvious symptoms.

This Dental Month, Aug 1st-Sept 30th, give your furry friend something to smile about! A professional dental check can help detect problems early, reduce bad breath, and support their overall health and wellbeing.

✨ Book your pet's dental assessment this month and help keep their teeth clean, healthy, and pain-free.

😺 Bad breath isn't "normal" for pets!

If your dog's or cat's breath has a strong odour, it could be a sign of dental disease or infection.

Fresh breath starts with healthy teeth and gums—book a dental check if you've noticed a change.

👩‍🏫 Support for our Next Gen Vets 🐾

Recently, Dr Hayley & Nurse Jayda were invited to give UQ Vet Students a talk about Dog Behaviour.

They were more than happy to take the opportunity to assist the undergraduate students with this important topic, and share their extensive experience & knowledge in a discussion on handling dogs in-clinic. Recognising and minimising stress & anxiety is something that we strive to do with all patients who visit our clinic.

They were ably accompanied by Murphy (the ever delightful Border Collie), who was happy to work the crowds and readily accepted treats, pats & general adoration. Along with Mr Hemsworth (the Jack Russell Terrier cross), who acted as a willing participant for handling plus eagerly accepted all treats offered.

It was heartening to find such enthusiastic students. Overall, the evening was a success and we hope these vet students picked up a few tips & tricks that will help them empathetically & confidently manage their future patients.

Did you know that some of the biggest dental problems can't be seen just by looking at your teeth? 🦷👀

Dental X-rays allow us to see below the gum line and inside your teeth, where issues can develop long before they cause pain.

X-rays can help detect:
✔️ Bone loss caused by gum disease
✔️ Infections at the tooth root
✔️ Cracks or damage not visible to the eye
✔️ Impacted or developing teeth

Think of it this way: examining your teeth without X-rays is like inspecting a house without ever looking behind the walls.

Modern dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation and are an important tool in catching problems early—often before they become more complicated and costly to treat.

⚠️ Giardia Alert for Dog Owners ⚠️

We've seen a recent increase in confirmed cases of Giardia in dogs in our local area.

Giardia is a microscopic parasite that can infect both animals and humans. It thrives in wet environments and is commonly picked up from contaminated water, soil, or faeces. Signs of infection may include:
🐾 Diarrhoea
🐾 Vomiting
🐾 Reduced appetite
🐾 Lethargy or reduced activity
🐾 Dehydration

To help reduce your pet's risk:
✅ Avoid puddles, ponds, and shared outdoor water bowls
✅ Discourage sniffing, licking, or rolling in damp soil and grass
✅ Minimise self-grooming after toileting
✅ Avoid contact with unwell animals
✅ Practise good hand hygiene at home

If your dog is showing any of these signs, or if you have concerns that they may have been exposed, please contact our clinic. We can perform in-clinic testing and discuss the most appropriate treatment options.

Brushing your pet's teeth really works!

Just like us, regular tooth brushing is one of the best ways to prevent plaque and tartar build-up.

Using a pet-safe toothbrush and toothpaste can make a big difference to your dog or cat's oral health.
