Wishing Dr Sarah the best of luck in her new role!

Yesterday, our team said goodbye to Dr Sarah Brabazon as she begins an exciting new chapter with the DPI.

Although we were sad to see her go, we’re incredibly grateful for the time Sarah spent with us and wish her all the very best in her new role.

Dr Sarah joined WestVETS as a recent graduate from James Cook University, and it has been a pleasure watching her grow and develop into the wonderful veterinarian she is today.

Thank you for everything, Dr Sarah. We’ll miss having you as part of the team and wish you every success in your next adventure! 🐾💙

We were thrilled to host a fantastic group of equine veterinarians at WestVETS Reproduction Centre for a hands-on Beyond the Basics in Mare Reproduction workshop over the weekend, run through VetPD.

Joining us as guest educators were Dr Lee Morris from EquiBreed ART in NZ and Associate Professor Dr Jennifer Clulow, PhD, DACT, a specialist in veterinary reproduction from Charles Sturt University.

Dr Tori Doyle from WestVETS was also part of the teaching team, sharing her practical experience in mare reproduction and working alongside Lee and Jen throughout the workshop.

It was a great few days of sharing knowledge, practical skills and experiences in equine reproduction. We’re proud to be able to host and be part of these opportunities for veterinarians to continue learning and improving the care we provide to our mares.

🩻 A sting in the tail… literally! 🌊🐎

What started as lameness after an ocean swim turned into one of those fascinating cases that reminds us why a thorough investigation is so important.

This horse presented to WestVETS Equine Hospital after becoming acutely lame following a swim at the beach. While the history raised suspicion of a stingray injury, the extent of the damage wasn’t obvious from the outside.

Radiographs of the pastern revealed the culprit—a stingray barb lodged within the pastern joint.

The serrated barb had penetrated the joint, creating a serious injury that required prompt diagnosis and treatment. Stingray barbs are not only mechanically damaging but also introduce venom and bacteria, making rapid veterinary intervention essential to minimise infection and preserve joint health.

This case is a great reminder that:
🌊 Sudden severe lameness after a beach outing should always be investigated.
🩻 Radiographs can reveal hidden foreign bodies that aren’t visible externally.
🏥 Early referral gives the best chance of a successful outcome when joints are involved.

Our team was able to identify the foreign body and develop an appropriate treatment plan to give this horse the best possible chance of returning to soundness.
