As a thank you, blood donors receive:

Did you know most dog and wildlife encounters happen right in our own backyards? 🐾

It's rarely about an aggressive dog or an irresponsible owner, it's usually just instinct, a curious or playful dog chasing something that moves. But even a gentle dog can cause real harm. Fractures, puncture wounds and internal injuries are common, and dog bite wounds often don't bleed, so an animal can look fine and still be seriously hurt.

If your dog has an encounter with wildlife, please:

πŸ“¦ Contain the animal safely and quickly
πŸ“ž Call our team straight away, don't wait to see if it "seems okay"
πŸ₯ Every minute counts, prompt treatment can be the difference between life and death

Check out the infographic below for more information πŸ‘‡

Spring has Sprung πŸ’ & the team at AEC Woolloongabba are treating lots of wildlife every day. We are inundated with baby possums and birds at this time of year but sometimes something unusual comes along, like our slithery friend here 🐍
Dr Cathy and a reluctant nurse Morna examined him for injuries after he was picked up off Toohey Rd. He had xrays & an ultrasound with nurse Jaide before it was decided that his injuries were too severe. While it was a very unfortunate outcome for this fellow, our very dedicated team are here 24/7 for emergencies, for your pets, or for our amazing wildlife, doing everything we can for our furry, feathered or slithery friends. ❀

🩸🐾 Meet Oakley, One of Our Blood Donor Heroes! πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈβ€οΈ

Not all heroes wear capes… some have four paws, a wagging tail and donate blood to help save the lives of other pets. 🐢🩸

Our handsome hero Oakley recently rolled up his imaginary sleeves and donated blood for patients in need at AEC. One donation can make an incredible difference for critically ill and injured pets requiring emergency transfusions.

Oakley handled his donation like an absolute superstar with plenty of pats, praise and treats included! ⭐️

A huge thank you to Oakley and his family for helping us give another pet the chance to make it home. ❀️

Could your dog be our next blood donor hero? 🩸🐾
Ask our AEC team about becoming part of our blood donor program.

πŸˆβ€β¬› BLACK CAT APPRECIATION DAY | 17 AUGUST πŸ–€

Today we’re celebrating the sleek, mysterious and seriously lovable black cats in our lives! 🐾

But black cats have been surrounded by myths for centuries… so let’s bust a few! πŸ‘‡

❀️MYTH: Black cats are bad luck.
πŸ–€FACT: The only thing they’re guilty of is stealing hearts and probably your favourite spot on the couch.

❀️MYTH: Black cats are less friendly.
πŸ–€FACT: Coat colour doesn’t determine personality. Black cats can be just as affectionate, playful and social as any other cat.

❀️MYTH: Cats don’t need regular vet checks.
πŸ–€FACT: Cats are experts at hiding signs of illness. Routine health checks can help identify subtle changes before they become more serious.

πŸš—πŸˆβ€β¬› let’s keep our cats engines purring, When was their last check-up?

This Black Cat Appreciation Day, show your little house panther some extra love from all of us at AEC… and don’t forget a few extra β€œpspspsps” β€οΈπŸˆβ€β¬›πŸΎ

🚨🐾 Attention Pet Parents! 🐾🚨

With tick season in full swing, it's more important than ever to stay vigilant! We're noticing a surge in tick cases, so knowing the signs is crucial to keep our furry companions safe!

Keep an eye out for symptoms of paralysis ticks in your pets:
πŸ•·οΈ Persistent coughing or gagging
πŸ•·οΈ Difficulty breathing or rapid panting
πŸ•·οΈ Weakness or unsteady on legs
πŸ•·οΈ Change in voice or excessive drooling
πŸ•·οΈ Vomiting or regurgitation

If you spot these signs, ACT IMMEDIATELY:
1️⃣ If you find a tick, safely remove the tick using fine-tipped tweezers or a tick remover (remember to bring the pulled tick into the vet for identification)
2️⃣ Seek urgent veterinary assistance for further treatment.

Prevention is key:
🌿 Use vet-recommended tick preventatives consistently.
🚫 Avoid known tick-infested areas or long grass during walks.

Remember to search your pet regularly for ticks, even if your pet is up to date with prevention!

Spread the word to keep our pets safe during this tick season! Share this post and keep a close watch on your furry pals for their well-being! πŸΆπŸ˜ΊπŸ’š

DOGGY DONORS, WE URGENTLY NEED YOU❗

Just like sick people, sometimes our patients require a blood transfusion to assist them in their recovery from a serious illness or accident. Our supply is critically low, and we are in URGENT need of blood donors to help our patients at the Animal Emergency Centre at Woolloongabba

WHAT HAPPENS?
Your pet will get admitted to our hospital as one of our VIP patients. Upon admission, a free examination, and blood test will be performed to ensure your pet is able to donate.
Your pet will then be prepared to donate. For most pets, this means lying on their side, though for more excitable pets, sedation or general anaesthesia may be required.

We collect 1 unit of blood from your pet, which is approximately 450ml for dogs, and 60ml for cats. This typically takes around 10 minutes. Your pet will then be provided with intravenous fluids and a snack, just like humans! We will then place a bandage over the site, and monitor your pet to make sure they are fit to go home!

In addition to you and your pet helping us save lives, to thank you both for your donation, there are several benefits including:

βœ”οΈ A $100 Petbarn voucher with your first donation
βœ”οΈ A FREE full physical exam with each donation
βœ”οΈ A FREE blood test with every donation

To schedule your pet for a donation, please call AEC Woolloongabba on (07) 3456 0500.
