Someone approaches to say hello and the dog gets to practice something deceptively simple, waiting patiently until they get to make a new friend! The goal is a calm, comfortable response to an everyday interaction. Small moments like these are what all that practice helps prepare our teams for. 💙

Sometimes training looks like passing another dog. Sometimes it looks like waiting calmly while the humans catch up. Here, our teams are practicing both: staying focused around other dogs and settling while their handlers talk. Everyday situations don't happen overnight, they are built through patient practice.

Before the big skills come the little check-ins. We asked Trainer Rachel: What’s the first thing a service dog should learn? Her answer: Engagement.

For a veteran and their service dog, learning to tune in to each other helps build the communication behind their teamwork. A dog’s attention creates opportunities to give a cue, practice a skill, and stay connected even when the world around them is busy.

Is your dog dressing up for Halloween? We want to see the tiny vampires, four-legged pumpkins, and hot dogs who take their role very seriously.

Share a costume photo in the comments by **October 26** for a chance to appear in our Halloween community collage! Please include your dog’s name and “Yes, you can feature my photo.” so we know we have your permission to share it.

We’re spreading the word about Cross Creek Park’s Trunk or Treat! Grab your costumes and bring the family for an evening of Halloween fun.

📍 Cross Creek Park - 📅 October 30, 2026 - 🕔 5:00 to 7:00 PM
🚚 Food trucks will be on-site!
