Losing a companion animal can be as emotionally devastating as losing a human family member. Yet when people struggle after a pet's death, they often wonder: Is this normal grief, or something more? Understanding the difference can help guide support and healing.

One way to promote healing and access support is the West Michigan Pet Loss Grief Support Group, which meets on the second Tuesday of each month. Learn more in this latest post in our Resource Center: https://www.pethospicevet.com/can-pet-loss-grief-turn-into-prolonged-grief-disorder/

In case you haven't heard, there's some big news for senior pet families in our community! Dr. Laurie Brush of Heaven at Home Pet Hospice is one of the veterinarians helping the American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ACVHPM) become the first AVMA-recognized specialty organization dedicated to pet hospice and end-of-life care.

What would that mean? Rigorous, standardized training in:
• Advanced pain and symptom management
• Quality-of-life assessment for chronic and terminal illness
• Goals-of-care conversations
• Grief support for families

The same level of intentional, compassionate care we expect in human hospice — formally established for pets and the people who love them. The ACVHPM has been established. Now it needs official recognition by the AVMA — and you can help make that happen before the August 13 deadline.

June is , a celebration of those among us who foster animals in need, and encourage would-be foster pet parents to take the plunge and help an animal find their forever home!

Foster homes are a space for abandoned or feral animals to be introduced to life with humans. Many find fostering a very rewarding experience - nurturing a hungry, frightened animal into a well-groomed, healthy animal who can be adopted into a family. Fostering also gives animals that may not thrive in a shelter environment a second chance at finding a suitable home.

Kudos to you, pet foster families, we appreciate all you do!

📣 One Week Away!

Veterinary hospice and palliative medicine has been practiced by dedicated professionals for decades. Now, it is on the path toward formal recognition as a board-certified veterinary specialty.

Heaven at Home invites you to join ACVHPM Committee Members Dr. Aja Senestraro and Dr. Tyler Carmack, along with IAAHPC Executive Director Coleen Ellis, for a conversation about the proposed American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ACVHPM), the current status of the petition process, and what specialty recognition could mean for the future of our profession.

Whether you're a family we've helped, a veterinarian, veterinary technician, student, or advocate for compassionate end-of-life care, we invite you to be part of this important discussion.

Two minutes. One form. Real impact. 📋

The AVMA is accepting public comments on whether veterinary hospice and palliative medicine should be recognized as a formal specialty. Comments close August 13.

If you've ever cared for a senior or seriously ill pet — or if you just believe they deserve the same quality of end-of-life care we'd want for ourselves — this is your chance to say so.

Heaven at Home believes every pet should have access to proper care, especially as they enter old age and their medical needs compound.

The Herkemer Fund was created in loving memory of Heaven at Home founder Dr. Laurie Brush's loyal companion. You have until August 13 to tell the AVMA that senior pets deserve better.

The American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ACVHPM) is seeking formal recognition as a specialty, which would mean national training standards for pain management, quality-of-life care, and family support at the end of a pet's life.
