π¨ Wanderlust ER π¨
This afternoon, our fearless director responded to a report of two beautiful Muscovy hens who had been hit by a vehicle in Greenville. The person who hit them did not stay, but thankfully, two kind people did.
Cynthia called everywhere she could, from the DNR to our partners at West Michigan Wildlife until they were connected with us. We got there as quickly as possible and were able to safely secure both girls. One was wrapped and placed in the truck, while the other, who appears to have a broken wing, was carefully scooped from the pond. Michelle stayed close to offer support and an extra set of hands and ears. They went door to door trying to find the owner.
Their owner surrendered both so they could receive medical care. Our regular vet is out for the weekend, but highly recommended VEG ER for Pets.
This is EXACTLY why we are fierce advocates for safe, secure housing and require it for every adoption. The gray Muscovy hen is the bravest girl we know. She took the brunt of the hit and sustained multiple severe fractures, including her wing, both legs, a dislocated neck, a severe bleed in the neck (with blood coming from her nares and mouth), a pneumothorax, internal bleeding, and free fluid in the abdomen likely caused by a broken egg, putting her at high risk of egg yolk peritonitis.
With guidance from the vet, we made the heartbreaking decision to set her free; tonight, she takes her final flight to the stars β€οΈβπ©Ή
Her friend has a badly broken wing but is expected to recover. She will likely be a lifelong member of the beloved Club Handiquacks, but she will live a pain-free and very loved life.
Rest easy, sweet angel. You deserved so much better.
If you are able to donate toward their emergency vet care, we would be so grateful π¦π
