This month, we’re thinking of everyone who has been affected by breast cancer; those fighting, those in remission, those supporting a loved one, and those we’ve lost. We’re sending love, strength, and support to all of you.
While breast cancer awareness often focuses on people, it's important to remember that our pets can develop mammary (breast) cancer, too. Below are a few things pet parents should know:
🎀 Mammary tumors are common in female dogs and are the third most common tumor in cats.
🎀 In dogs, about half of mammary tumors are malignant (cancerous). In cats, at least 80% are malignant.
🎀 Spaying can significantly reduce the risk of mammary cancer, particularly when performed before the first heat cycle. The best timing for spaying can vary by pet, so talk with your veterinarian about what is right for your dog or cat.
🎀 And just like in people, early detection matters. If you feel a new lump or bump along your pet's mammary chain, don't assume it's "just a fatty lump." Have it checked.
