Stella recently presented to Dr. Mikaela with abnormal urinary signs, including urinating in unusual locations and blood-tinged urine. During examination, Dr. Mikaela palpated a firm structure within Stella’s bladder, prompting further investigation with radiographs. The X-rays revealed the presence of three large bladder stones.

Dr. Mikaela and Dr. Marina proceeded with a cystotomy to surgically remove the stones. During the procedure, they were surprised to discover an additional fourth stone hidden within the bladder.

Following surgery, Stella has made an excellent recovery and is now back to her happy self, with all urinary symptoms resolved.

How do bladder stones form?
Bladder stones can develop for a variety of reasons. Certain breeds may be genetically predisposed, while changes in urine composition due to factors such as water intake, diet, urinary tract infections, or underlying medical conditions can also contribute to stone formation.

Treatment
Surgical removal is not always necessary. Depending on the composition of the stones, some can be dissolved with a specially formulated prescription diet. In many cases, these diets are recommended long-term to help prevent recurrence.

We are so pleased to hear that Stella is feeling much better and recovering well 🩷

🐾MEET THE TEAM🐾

Sophie is one of our outstanding kennel hands who works in the afternoons 3 days a week - as she is also a Grade 12 student!

Sophie is a powerhouse in the clinic and is responsible for much of the behind the scenes work each afternoon, including cleaning surgery theatres, restocking supplies and helping the vets with consultations. Her favourite parts of the job are when we reunite the patients with their owners after staying with us- whether for only a few hours or many days🏥

Over the months we have had Sophie training with us, she has completed her Cert II in Animal Care, with the intention to further study a Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing next year!🎓

At home, Sophie and her family are huge animal lovers! She has 3 dogs- Miffy, Lady and Rosie 🐶and 2 cats - Arlo and Duchess🐈
Sophie also dedicates a lot of her time to fostering kittens with The Kitten Cove, which is how her little kitten Arlo came to be part of the family🫶🏼

We can’t wait to see how Sophie progresses over the years! She is absolutely amazing and we value her and her work ethic so much 🩷

🐾MEET THE TEAM🐾

Tyrah is one of our incredible staff members who began with 4 Paws last year as one of our trainee kennel hands. She has improved and expanded her abilities and knowledge of the daily duties of veterinary staff immensely since August.
So far during her time in the veterinary field, she had found an interest in the anaesthetic recovery of surgical patients, and is passionate about furthering her skills and experience in surgical monitoring and the works within the surgical theatre.

Tyrah is in her senior year of high school, while ALSO studying a Certificate III in Animal Studies with us once a week on top of her usual kennel hand shifts. So dedicated!

Originally from Ingham, now living in Townsville, she has always had a love for animals and owns many of her own, such as:
7 dogs🐶
3 boars🐗
5 ducks🦆
1 turkey🦃

Tyrah has been a delight to have on the team and we look forward to helping her grow to fulfil her aspiring vet nurse ambitions. We are so proud!💜

🐾MEET THE TEAM🐾

Dr Praveena❤️

We would love to introduce our new addition to the 4 Paws team, Dr Praveena! She has been with us since February of this year and is constantly sharing her incredible enthusiasm and energy amongst the vets and nurses.
After graduating from JCU last year, we are honoured to be able to support her as she navigates her first year in the vet world.
Praveena has always loved the idea of working with animals, so she pursued a career in veterinary science after completing a degree in zoology in Melbourne. Over the last 5 years living in Townsville, Praveena has grown to love the tropical climate and enjoys life up here very much🌴
Her interests in the field so far include problem solving difficult and interesting cases with her colleagues and seeing the patient’s successful outcomes day after day! She hopes to expand more on her medicine and surgical skills as she progresses through the year💊

Dr Praveena and her partner have recently adopted their little furry companion Percival, who came into the clinic as an injured stray puppy, caring for and loving him through his journey recovering from major surgeries at such a young age🐶🫶🏼

Please say hello next time you see her in clinic!
We can’t wait to see Praveena grow into an even more amazing vet over the months and years!
