Meet Frankie! 🐾

This tiny little Italian Greyhound came in for his vaccination and was quite possibly the cutest little patient we’ve had in our hands! 🥹

Frankie was so teeny, he practically fit in the palm of our hands. 🥰

Safe to say, we were all a little bit obsessed! 💚

Bird flu is making headlines, so Better Homes & Gardens asked Greencross Vets what it means for our pets.

Greencross Vets veterinarian Dr Nina shares practical advice to help pet parents understand the risks and take simple precautions.

“Bird flu can infect all mammals, so dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets can all be infected.”

From avoiding contact with sick or dead wildlife to keeping cats indoors and dogs on a leash around wildlife, a few simple steps can help reduce exposure.

🖤 A majestic visitor who never should have needed a trip to the vet.

This beautiful black swan was found with a fishing hook stuck in its mouth - a painful and completely preventable injury caused by discarded fishing gear.

Removing the hook required a general anaesthetic, along with pain relief to keep this feathered patient comfortable while we treated them. 🦢

A reminder to all anglers: please take your fishing line, hooks and tackle home with you or use a designated disposal bin. The Victorian Fisheries Authority advises that old fishing line should be placed in bins, or if there are no bins available, taken home, cut up and disposed of in general waste. Their Seal the Loop program also provides dedicated bins for unwanted fishing line, hooks, netting and rope. (VFA)

Discarded fishing gear can cause entanglement, injury and even death to wildlife. A few extra seconds to dispose of your gear properly can make a huge difference. 💔

🎣 Fish responsibly. Dispose responsibly. Protect our wildlife. A big thanks for the wildlife careers for bringing this amazing swan in and thanks to our team for helping 🫶🏼

Isn’t Practice Manager Abi’s pup just adorable? Ulrich the 21wk old White Swiss Shepherd is also a little bit of a cute genetic mess. Here he is recovering from surgery to remove his lower baby canines due to them traumatising his hard palate. This has happened as a result of two separate issues, an overbite (think Phteven) and base narrow canines. Now we have to wait and see what will happen when the adults come through, but he will likely need to see the dog dentists in Brisbane for a procedure known as Crown Reduction. Leaving the canines is a source of chronic pain, causing mouth shyness and aggression.

Cat Got Worms?
Have you noticed a strange amount of sesame seeds on your bed or couch and haven’t eaten a burger lately?
They may be tapeworm proglottids, which when dry can look strangely like sesame seeds (or cucumber seeds depending on your inclination)
Never fear, these are easily treated with regular worming.
There are a few different types of tapeworm but the most common are flea tapeworm (dipylidium caninum), Taenia and zipper worm (spirometra erinacei). All of these are contracted by ingestion of the intermediate host (fleas, rats, mice, lizards, geckos, frogs and many more!)
Dogs can get a few other varieties of tapeworm some of which can be a serious human health risk such as hydatid tapeworm.
Never fear most cat owners have been there and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about (unless you tried to eat them). Contact us today to help develop a comprehensive parasite plan for your fluff ball.

Can you believe every snake in this photo is a highly venomous Eastern Brown?

This is why snake identification is tricky. If your four legged friend has potentially been bitten, it’s important they are brought to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible for an examination and treatment.

If possible and without putting yourself or others at risk, take a photo of the snake to aid with quick identification. These snakes are active all year round, however are particularly active currently, as we have seen two cases in the last few weeks.

Also please remember it is illegal under government protection laws to cause harm to any wildlife including snakes. Snakes play an important role in our environment and only bite when they feel threatened.

We have been seeing numerous Parvovirus cases around the Condon/Rasmussen/Kelso area the past few weeks.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and often fatal virus that attacks the cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract in dogs. It is mainly seen in puppies that are not fully vaccinated. Parvovirus symptoms usually appear 3-10 days after exposure and initially start with lethargy, fever and in-appetence and then leading to severe and often bloody diarrhoea and vomiting.
Dogs can contract it from direct contact or indirectly through faeces, water bowls and the general environment in which it can remain for at least a year but up to seven!

We strongly urge that you ensure your pets are up to date with their vaccinations and keep them confined until they are to prevent any chance of them contracting the deadly disease.

Pictured is a litter of 15 Great Dane puppies, who were in for their vaccines before heading to their new homes!
