When livestock die from Polioencephalomalacia (PEM), large patches of the brain will fluoresce under black/UV light.
‼️No other condition causes this‼️
Make sure you pack a UV light in your post mortem kit and examine the brain under the black light for ALL cases of sudden death, blindness or neurological signs (eg staggers, down, tremors, odd gait, altered behaviour).
NOTE: Depending on the severity, you can get no fluorescence on mild PEM cases so be sure to send the brain to a pathologist to confirm - it’s more common than you think!
