This little patient was staying with us for treatment, but he wasn’t a fan of being left alone.

So when he could, he stayed close to nurse Kim instead.

At JCUVet, we know that caring for animals isn’t just about medications, procedures, and monitoring. It’s also about recognising what helps each patient feel calm, comfortable, and secure during their stay.

Because the smallest acts of care can make the biggest difference in making our patients feel safe. ❤️

Is your pet constantly scratching, licking, or dealing with recurring ear problems? 🐾

When symptoms persist, return frequently, or don't respond as expected to treatment, pets can really benefit from a specialist dermatology assessment.

Signs that may indicate your pet should see a veterinary dermatologist include:
• Persistent itching, licking, chewing, or rubbing
• Recurring ear infections or ongoing ear discomfort
• Hair loss or thinning coat
• Red, inflamed, or irritated skin
• Scaly, crusty, or thickened skin
• Changes in skin colour or texture
• Unusual odours from the skin or ears

Chronic skin and ear disease can have a significant impact on your pet's quality of life and may sometimes be linked to underlying allergies, hormonal disorders, immune-mediated conditions, or other medical issues.

We're pleased to welcome visiting specialist Dr John Hutt to JCUVet, bringing expertise in veterinary dermatology to help investigate and manage complex skin and ear conditions. Chat to your regular veterinarian for a referral or give us a call.

Just like in human hospitals, our vet hospital has advanced diagnostics like a CT machine. This week a vulnerable species; a flat-back sea turtle, needed our help.

Working alongside James Cook University our team donated the imaging and clinical support needed to help assess this beautiful seaturtle before rehabilitation and eventual release thanks to

Advanced imaging, like CT, can play an important role in wildlife care, helping teams better understand injuries and make informed decisions for treatment, recovery and rehabilitation.

As a not-for-profit teaching hospital, supporting wildlife care is something we’re deeply passionate about. Each year, we provide in-kind services and clinical support to a number of wildlife and community organisations across North Queensland, helping contribute to the care and conservation of our unique native species.

We’re proud to play a small part in this sea turtle’s story and look forward to seeing it return to the wild soon. 💛

We're so excited to announce we have recently commissioned a new renal replacement therapy unit, further expanding our treatment capabilities for critically ill animals in our hospital.

Renal Replacement Therapy is a process performed outside the body (extracorporeal), that filters and cleans waste products, toxins, and excess fluids from the blood when the kidneys can no longer perform these functions.

This new advanced service will help support pets with acute kidney injury, severe leptospirosis, certain toxicities and complex immune-related diseases.

The unit also allows us to provide advanced blood purification therapies, including therapeutic plasma exchange, for suitable patients requiring specialist care.

It's one amazing unit!

Just some of the dog friends we met at Flynn’s walk yesterday…captured through the lens of one of our vets, Dr Max Ling.

From pint-sized pups to big best mates, there were plenty of wagging tails helping to bring the community together in support of mental health within the veterinary profession. 💙

This morning, we were excited to welcome 47 veterinary students from Thailand to tour our hospital as part of James Cook University’s international placement program. 🌏🐾

Representing Walailak University, Mahanakorn University of Technology, and Kasetsart University, the group toured our hospital and learned more about the way our teams combine clinical care and teaching within an Australian veterinary hospital environment.

Over the next two weeks, the students will explore Australian wildlife, diagnostic techniques, and the important connection between research and patient care — including learning about unique species such as kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, platypus, and sea turtles.

Programs like this are a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen international connections, and inspire the next generation of veterinarians across the globe.

We’re proud to welcome them to JCU and to North Queensland. 💛
