🎆 TOWNSVILLE SHOW FIREWORKS ARE COMING UP 🎆

Fireworks can be fun for us, but they can be very stressful and frightening for our pets 🐶🐱

With the Townsville Show fireworks approaching, now is the time to prepare your furry family members and help keep them calm and safe.

🐾 Our top tips:
• Keep pets safely indoors before the fireworks begin
• Close windows, curtains, and doors to reduce noise and flashes
• Turn on the TV, radio, or calming music for background sound
• Make sure collars and ID tags are secure
• Check that microchip details are up to date
• Provide a safe, quiet hiding place where your pet feels comfortable

Some pets may benefit from anxiety medications or calming products during fireworks season. These medications are prescription-only and require a veterinary appointment in advance to discuss the safest and most suitable option for your pet.

Thunder jackets and calming wraps may also help some anxious pets and are available through some online retailers and pet stores.

🦎 Proper Husbandry = A Healthy & Happy Reptile 🐍

Reptiles are amazing pets, but unlike cats and dogs, they rely completely on their environment to stay healthy. Good husbandry is one of the most important parts of reptile care — and small mistakes can lead to serious health problems.

Here are a few essentials every reptile owner should know:

☀️ Correct Heating & Lighting
Reptiles need proper heat lamps and temperature gradients to regulate their body temperature, digest food, and support their immune system. Many species also require UVB lighting to help prevent metabolic bone disease.

🥬 Species-Appropriate Diets
Different reptiles have very different nutritional needs. Some require live insects, others leafy greens, and some need carefully balanced supplements like calcium and vitamin D3.

💧 Humidity & Hydration
Too much or too little humidity can cause shedding problems, respiratory disease, and dehydration. Fresh water should always be available.

🏠 Proper Enclosure Setup
Tank size, hiding spaces, substrate, and enrichment all play a huge role in reducing stress and keeping reptiles healthy and active.

⚠️ Common Signs Something Is Wrong

-Poor appetite
-Weakness or lethargy
-Difficulty shedding
-Swelling or soft bones
-Mouth discharge or wheezing

On Sunday, the team at Hammett Street Vets proudly took part in Flynn’s Walk — a special event held in memory Dr. Flynn Hargreaves, a young Australian veterinarian who tragically died by su***de.

Veterinary teams face not only the physical demands of the job, but also the emotional weight that comes with caring so deeply for animals and the people who love them. Flynn’s Walk is an important reminder that mental health matters, support matters, and conversations can make a difference.

We’re incredibly proud to have participated and to stand alongside others in our profession to honour those we’ve lost, and support those who may be struggling.
