WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU DROP YOUR CAT OFF FOR DESEXING?

You’ve handed over the carrier, said goodbye and watched us disappear through the doors with your cat… but what happens next?

Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at your cat’s desexing day:

🏡 Settling In
Your cat is set up in their own hospital cage with a comfortable bed and litter tray, giving them a safe and cosy space for the day.

🩺 Nurse Triage
One of our nurses performs an initial health check, including temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate, to make sure your cat is feeling well before their procedure.

🩸 Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Test
If you have approved pre-anaesthetic blood testing, a blood sample is collected and checked before we proceed.

💉 Pre-Medication & Anaesthetic
When it’s time for surgery, your cat receives medications carefully calculated for them, including their pre-anaesthetic sedation and then their full general anaesthetic.

🧼 Surgical Preparation
The surgical area is clipped, thoroughly cleaned and prepared using sterile techniques ready for surgery.

👩‍⚕️ Surgery Time
Once everything is ready, our veterinary team performs your cat’s desexing procedure while they are closely monitored throughout their anaesthetic.

💤 Recovery & Wake-Up
After surgery, your cat is moved into recovery where our nursing team keeps a close eye on them while they wake up. They’re kept comfortable, warm and monitored throughout their recovery.

🍽️ A Little Something to Eat
Once they’re awake enough, it’s time for something to eat! Because waking up from surgery is always better with a snack!

🏠 Home Time!
Once your cat is awake, comfortable and our team is happy with their recovery, they’re ready to head home with you to continue resting and recovering.

So while it might feel strange leaving your cat with us for the day, there’s a whole team behind these clinic doors looking after them every step of the way💚

THINGS WE HEAR EVERY DAY AT A CAT-ONLY VET CLINIC! 🐾

Working at a cat only clinic means we hear some pretty hilarious things from our lovely cat parents! 😂💕

“He's actually really friendly at home!” – As their cat plots our downfall from inside the carrier.
“He hasn't eaten in HOURS!” – His last meal was at 7am. It's now 9am.
“She doesn't normally make that noise!” – As their tiny angel transforms into a roaring lion.
“He won't take tablets!” – Trust us, we believe you!
“She's an indoor cat, but she's the boss of the whole house.” – Naturally. 👑
“He was perfectly fine until I got the carrier out!” – The ultimate betrayal.
“He's not usually this dramatic!” – Meanwhile, he's singing the song of his people from the consult room.

We wouldn't have it any other way! Every cat has their own personality, and that's exactly why we love what we do at Tropical Queensland Cat Clinic!

🐱🦴 Cats get arthritis too!

Is your older cat slowing down? Sleeping more? Not jumping onto the couch like they used to?

It’s easy to put these changes down to “just getting old” — but they can actually be signs of arthritis and chronic pain.
Cats are incredibly good at hiding discomfort, so the signs of arthritis can be surprisingly subtle. Keep an eye out for:

🐾 Hesitating before jumping up or down
🐾 Using furniture as “steps” to reach higher places
🐾 Sleeping more or becoming less active
🐾 Stiffness after resting
🐾 Difficulty using the litter tray
🐾 Grooming less, especially around their back or hindquarters
🐾 Becoming grumpy or less tolerant of being touched
🐾 No longer climbing, playing or exploring like they used to
🐾 Spending more time hiding or keeping to themselves

Remember - Getting older doesn’t have to mean living with pain.

There are plenty of ways we can help make arthritic cats more comfortable and improve their quality of life. If you’ve noticed changes in your cat’s movement, behaviour or daily routine, it’s worth having a chat with your vet.

Sometimes “slowing down” is your cat’s quiet way of telling you something hurts!

💉🐱 Is your cat up to date with their vaccinations?

Vaccinations are an important part of protecting your cat from serious and potentially life-threatening infectious diseases.

After completing their kitten vaccination course, ongoing booster vaccinations are recommended throughout your cat’s life. Depending on the vaccine, your cat’s lifestyle and their individual risk factors, some vaccinations may be recommended annually while others may be given at different intervals.

And yes — indoor cats need to have their vaccination needs assessed too!

Your vet can recommend the most appropriate vaccination schedule based on your cat’s age, health, lifestyle and risk of exposure.

Did you know that black cats can often be overlooked when it comes to adoption? 💔

Despite their gorgeous glossy coats, beautiful eyes and personalities just as wonderful as any other cat, these little house panthers can sometimes spend longer waiting for their forever homes.

Sadly, outdated superstitions and misconceptions still surround black cats, but we're here to remind everyone that black cats bring nothing but love, cuddles and a little extra magic into your life! ✨🐾

This October, we're celebrating all things Black Cats and encouraging everyone to look beyond coat colour when choosing their next furry family member.
