Cats are incredibly good at hiding pain. Unlike us, they canโt tell us when something hurts, and often the signs are so subtle they can easily be mistaken for ageing, laziness or simply a change in personality.
Knowing your catโs normal behaviour can help you recognise when something isnโt quite right. ๐
Signs your cat may be experiencing pain include:
๐พ Reluctance to jump up or down
๐พ Sleeping or hiding more than usual
๐พ Becoming withdrawn, irritable or less affectionate
๐พ Reduced grooming or an unkempt coat
๐พ Over-grooming a particular area
๐พ Changes in appetite or eating habits
๐พ Difficulty using the litter tray
๐พ Stiffness or changes in the way they walk
๐พ Hesitating on stairs or avoiding favourite high places
๐พ Changes in facial expression or posture
๐พ Drooling, bad breath or difficulty eating, which may indicate dental pain
Conditions such as arthritis, dental disease, urinary problems, injuries and other illnesses can all cause discomfort โ sometimes without any obvious outward signs.

If your cat just doesnโt seem like themselves, donโt assume itโs simply because they're getting older. A consultation with a vet can help identify underlying causes and ensure they receive the care and pain relief they need.
