If you've got an older pet, a handful of small changes at home do more than most owners expect. 🐾 A couple of runners or rugs across slippery floorboards (tile and timber are the enemy of an arthritic back end). A litter tray with one low side, so your cat isn't hurdling into it. A step or ramp up to the couch they're going to climb onto anyway. Raised food and water bowls if there's neck or shoulder soreness. None of it is expensive, and it takes an afternoon.

Myth: your dog's slowing down simply because he's getting older. 🐾 It's the most understandable assumption in the world, and it's also the one that hides the most arthritis. Pain in dogs rarely looks like limping and whining — it looks like being a bit slower on the stairs, hesitating before jumping into the car, taking longer to get going in the mornings, or just not asking for the walk quite as often. None of that is "old age" on its own. It's discomfort, and there's a great deal we can do about it.

We put a TV in every consult room. This is Louie's show now. We don't get a vote.

The screens weren't a gimmick. Something gentle playing gives a nervous animal somewhere to point their attention that isn't us, the table, or the smell of the room. Dogs settle faster. Cats pretend not to watch, and then watch.

Louie has taken this considerably further than intended and now treats the consult room as a private cinema with an attached medical service.

He did let us examine him eventually. During an ad break, essentially.

Trish is our Practice Manager, which is a tidy job title for “the person holding the whole clinic together”. The roster that means there’s a vet here when you need one, the stock that’s on the shelf before anyone notices it running low, the appointment that starts when it’s meant to — that’s all her, and you only ever notice that work when it isn’t done.
What we’d rather you knew is that she does all of that without ever losing the pet side of it. She still knows your pet’s name, and, more impressively, exactly what they’re like: the one who’s anxious on the table, the one who’s dramatic about nail trims, the one who is suspiciously good at helping himself to the treat jar.
Happy birthday, Trish. From all of us, and from a great many pets who’d say so themselves if they could.

Meet Chiara — the latest Cat Rescue Gold Coast cat through our doors this week, in for her desexing. She spent recovery peeking out from her blanket like she wasn't sure the coast was clear yet, which is a pretty reasonable response to a big day. 🐾 Every desexed cat through this partnership is one less litter and one step closer to a family of her own — we're always glad to be part of that. Meet Lindi. Owned by two dachshunds. Comprehensively outvoted in her own home.

Lindi is usually the first voice you hear when you ring us, and the one sorting out your appointment, your reminder and your account — all while running a household where she is, by her own admission, third in the pecking order.

If you've ever called in a mild panic about your dog eating something stupid and been talked calmly through it, that was probably her.

Yes, we Google things mid-consult. You absolutely want us to.

Here is the actual search, live from the clinic: "whats the dose of amoxyclav for a big big dog". Riveting stuff.

Doses change. Guidelines get updated. A vet who is certain about everything without ever checking isn't being confident, they're being lazy — and doses are weight-dependent, so "roughly" isn't good enough when the patient is 45kg.

If you ever see us looking something up, that's the job being done properly. Ask us what we're checking. We'll tell you.
