GASTROSCOPE DAY | 20 OCTOBER | MUSK, VIC

A gastroscopy is how we definitively diagnose equine gastric ulcers.

Horses with gastric ulcers can show a range of signs, including:
* Poor performance or reluctance to work
* Changes in behaviour or temperament
* Reduced appetite or picky eating
* Weight loss or poor body condition
* Girthiness or sensitivity around the abdomen
* Recurrent, low-grade colic

However, some horses show very few obvious signs. These symptoms can also overlap with other conditions

A gastroscope is a long, flexible camera that is passed through the horse’s nostril, down the oesophagus and into the stomach. This allows our vets to directly examine the stomach (squamous and glandular) and the pyloric region.

Gastroscopy helps us assess the location, severity and distribution of ulceration, allowing treatment to be tailored to the individual horse. It’s not all the same!

Reassessment following treatment is important to determine whether the ulcers have healed and whether further management changes or treatment are needed.

If you suspect your horse may be suffering from gastric ulcers, or would like to discuss whether gastroscopy is appropriate, send us a message.

Safe facilities & limited stabling available overnight.

LAMINITIS: RECOGNISING THE EARLY SIGNS 🌱🩺

With spring pasture growth underway across Victoria, now is an important time to consider laminitis prevention, particularly in horses and ponies predisposed. Laminitis affects the sensitive lamellae that attach the pedal bone to the hoof wall. In severe cases, this can lead to displacement of the pedal bone and long-term complications.

Suspected laminitis requires prompt veterinary attention. Early recognition and proactive management can help reduce the risk of laminitis and its complications - Contact your veterinarian ASAP ☎️

What are the early signs?
• Increased digital pulses: A stronger or bounding pulse at the back of the fetlock can indicate foot pain.
• Changes in gait: Short, stiff or pottery steps, reluctance to turn tightly, or hesitation on firm ground.
• Increased hoof warmth: Particularly when accompanied by other clinical signs. Hoof temperature alone is not diagnostic.
• Weight shifting: Repeatedly shifting weight, lifting the feet or reluctance to move. A rocked-back stance may indicate more significant pain.

Prevention:
Horses with insulin dysregulation, equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), previous laminitis or excess body condition are at increased risk. PPID (equine Cushing’s disease) can also contribute.

During periods of lush pasture growth, consider the following:
• Grazing muzzles: A correctly fitted muzzle can reduce grass intake while allowing turnout. Check for rubbing regularly.
• Pasture management: Consider restricted grazing or a well-managed dry lot or track system. Avoid sudden increases in access to lush pasture.
• Body condition: Monitor body condition and neck crest fat. Lean horses can also have insulin dysregulation.
• Metabolic health: Discuss with your vet if your horse has a history of laminitis or other risk factors.
• Dietary management: Consider pasture, hay and hard feed together.

🩻 An abnormal X-ray does not always mean an abnormal horse … let’s talk about it!

👉 PREPURCHASE EXAMINATIONS

This is particularly important when we talk about "kissing spines" (impinging/overriding dorsal spinous processes) and Pre-Purchase Examinations.

Radiographic changes within the back and neck can be present in horses that are clinically NORMAL, comfortable and performing well.

Extensive clinical observation shows no evidence of a correlation between the radiographic appearance of the spine and the future risk of disease or back pain in asymptomatic horses. Many horses with mild to moderate radiographic abnormalities—such as narrowed spaces or mild bone remodeling—compete successfully without ever showing clinical signs of "kissing spines".

Finding changes on an X-ray does not automatically mean that those changes are causing pain or will cause a problem in the future.

During a pre-purchase examination, the vet assesses the horse for findings such as back or neck pain, reduced range of motion, muscle asymmetry, lameness or neurological abnormalities. Where there is a clinical concern, targeted diagnostic imaging may then provide valuable additional information.

Treat the horse, not the X-ray 🐴 Kissing spine on a radiograph does not, by itself, mean a horse has a painful back!

👉Remember: The most important aspect of assessing the current physical condition of a horse during the pre-purchase assessment is a thorough clinical examination. The radiographic examination is a complementary examination and represents only a small section of the range of findings during a pre-purchase examination

SAVE THE DATE: GASTROSCOPE DAY 🐴🎥

Tuesday 20th October | EquiVets Victoria, Musk VIC

Gastroscopy takes the guesswork out of gastric ulcers and allows us to actually see what’s going on inside your horse’s stomach.

⭐️ Accurately diagnose
Identify the severity and location of ulcers, and whether they are squamous or glandular.

⭐️ Choose the right treatment
Different types of gastric ulcers require different treatment and management approaches.

⭐️ Rule out other causes
Poor performance, girthiness, weight loss and changes in behaviour can have many causes. Gastroscopy allows us to confirm whether gastric ulcers are actually the problem.

⭐️ Monitor healing
Follow-up gastroscopy can show whether treatment is working and help guide the next steps
