If you ever find yourself attending a horse beach treck, there's only one golden rule !!!

Never ever say the words ' I Can Gallop.'
As this will result in three things

1- You get the least comfortable, least educated horse.
2- The guides instantly think that you're a NUFFIE
3- you will be treated like the NUFFIE you are.

Having worked at a riding school taking beach rides for 17 years. If you want the best horses, the best ride and the best guides understate your ability.

I cannot tell you how perfectly this worked out for us Muriwai Beach Horse Treks . We truly had the best morning and the best horses....

Turns out Miranda can Gallop too hahahahahahahaha

Timing is everything, if you have perfect timing, treats can enhance your training.

None of my foundation training, is trained with treats.
Everything about my foundation with my horses is about my horses. Trusting in my decision as the leader to keep us all safe.

Where we place their feet, how we influence their feet, and the language that we build to communicate. Is all trained treat free.

I do however use treats with trick training. Lie downs, bow ECT.
This is once relationship is established, the boundaries of our relationship are established.

There's absolutely no judgement, for those who use treats well within their training. Personally, I love feeding my horse's carrots.

If you're really interested in what we do with our ponies, and you're looking for a step-by-step guide for building a language of cues, on the ground, that translates directly to ridden work.

Check out

It doesn't matter if you want to ride in a neck rope, a bridle, OUR knot free - Beautiful halter.

The consistency of the cues that we use on the ground translating to the saddle really helps our horses trust in our decisions as the leader.

Confidence comes from knowing we will succeed - and I succeed by teaching one cue at a time. :)

When my horse welds his feet to the ground and refuses my lead forward cue, first I check in with him and see if he's okay, Make sure he knows that I've listened.

Then ask him to step his inside hind leg forward and under and reward every try that. He gives me that listens to my forward cue.

I also make sure that I go home and work on my 1/4 clocks lots
The more ways we have to communicate with all four parts of our horse. Not just our hind end and nose .

The easier it is to ask our four parts of our horse to come or go wherever we like.

This is how I work with horses who don't love bikes.
For me it's not about the bike,
It's about communicating with all four parts of my horse. Near the bike around the bike next to the bike.

Alaska is always allowed to make mistakes
I simply correct him by doing the opposite.
If the situation is too difficult
We go back a step.
And make sure our cues work in an easier situation.

Soak time is one of the most important elements of horse training.
And I cut it out of so many videos.

A lot of the time a 3-minute video would have 9 to 16 minutes of standing around. Not doing much.

Never overlooks like time. There's no such thing as too much. ;)

Side step on the circle
If I close my inside leg and inside rein - ask for Side step and my horse doesn't understand .......

I do not use my leg harder - my cues never get harder.
Instead I add a rhymic motivator pressure on my boot. Rhythmic is key !

If my horsey still doesn't understand.

I make sure he understands my closed soft leg behind the girth and remind him how to move into the space that I create for him .

If you want more break down of this kind of training.

Part 3 - first day - Loading Fin on a trailer.

If my horse backs out without me asking that's okay. Horses are allowed to make mistakes - I simply take him all the way off the trailer, do the opposite and work on our go forward cue.

The most important thing about trailer loading is rewarding the smallest try. In this session, Finn got to a point where he'd listen to my forward cue, he had all four feet on the trailer. . .

Don't get greedy Lara. 😉

So proud of this little horse.

Our next step will be to have Finn stand there quietly whilst I Pat all four parts of his body, with the noodle. Allowing him to leave as many times as he needs to to feel confident.
