๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿฑ Marcie vs The Lily: A Very Close Call! ๐Ÿšจ
Meet Marcie, a gorgeous young cat who got herself into a spot of trouble after deciding that a lily looked like a tasty snack!

Unfortunately for Marcie, lilies are highly toxic to cats and even small amounts can cause severe acute kidney failure. This includes eating parts of the plant and, in some cases, exposure to pollen or vase water. โš ๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Common signs of lily toxicity can include:
๐Ÿคข Vomiting and nausea
๐Ÿ’ง Increased or decreased drinking and urination
๐Ÿ˜ด Lethargy and weakness
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Loss of appetite
๐Ÿพ Abdominal discomfort
๐Ÿšจ In severe cases, kidney failure and neurological signs can develop

Thankfully, Marcie's family acted quickly and she was brought straight to Advanced Vetcare. We thoroughly washed the pollen from her face, induced vomiting to remove as much of the plant as possible and started her on IV fluids to protect her kidneys. ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿฉบ

The good news? Marcie's kidney parameters remained normal the following day, and she was able to head home happy and healthy! ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’•
A reminder for cat owners: If you have cats at home, it's safest to avoid lilies altogether. They are simply not worth the risk!
We're very happy this little lily-loving troublemaker had a happy ending! ๐Ÿฑ๐ŸŒฟ

Meet Joey, an 11-year-old Samoyed with quite the appetite... just not for food! ๐Ÿพ

Joey came to see us after several weeks of ongoing diarrhoea, poor appetite, and a worrying weight loss of nearly 2 kg in just 4 weeks. Abdominal X-rays revealed he'd been snacking on an impressive collection of rocks ๐Ÿชจ. While that certainly wasn't ideal, we weren't convinced it explained everything.

An abdominal ultrasound uncovered another suspiciously shaped foreign body hiding in his intestines. The only way to find out what it was was with exploratory surgery.

The culprit? A doorstop! ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿ˜ณ
During surgery, we removed the doorstop along with the rocks, giving Joey the best chance for a full recovery.

Joey's story is a great reminder that our pets can swallow the most unexpected objects, and sometimes there is more than one problem going on. If your pet has persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, or unexplained weight loss, it's always worth having them checked sooner rather than later.

We're happy to report Joey is on the road to recovery, and home with his family โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ.

๐ŸŒฝ Corn cobs are one of the most common (and trickiest!) foreign bodies we see in dogs. ๐Ÿถ

If swallowed whole, theyโ€™re the perfect size to get stuck in the stomach or intestines and can quickly become a life-threatening obstruction โ€” often requiring surgery ๐Ÿฅ

At Advanced Vet Care, we have a range of endoscopes, which means if a corn cob is caught early, we can sometimes retrieve it from the stomach without surgery ๐Ÿ™Œ

But itโ€™s not always that simpleโ€ฆ on the way down, strong jaw muscles can crush and compress the cob, helping it slip down the oesophagus. On the way back up? We donโ€™t have those muscles to help โ€” which can make retrieval much more challenging.

If you think your dog may have eaten a corn cob ๐ŸŒฝ, early veterinary attention can make all the difference ๐Ÿพ
