Happy “not-yet-storming still spring beautiful” Sunday, POVC Family!!

So tomorrow (Monday April 27th) it looks like Central Illinois is the Death Star and Luke Skywalker is driving the storm.

For our storm-fearing dogs (and tomorrow it might be ALL of them), a combination of Gabapentin and Trazodone can do a lot to subdue the wind-up of storm anxieties.

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE “GABA-TRAZ” AT HOME, I would recommend the following:

Dose One: Tonight by 10:00 PM

Dose Two: Tomorrow morning between 6-10AM

Optional if necessary: Repeat Trazodone dose anytime four hours after the AM dose; or repeat both GABA and Traz anytime 6-8 hours after the AM dose.

The critical component to any of the panic/phobic responses is subduing the wind-up trigger before it fires — reigning in wind-up once it’s triggered can be next to impossible.

And the best way to never ever need a photo of your pet to help find it??

Is to TAKE SEVERAL!!

Especially if your dog is not microchipped.

In a worst case scenario with property damage or a trigger-driven panicky leash/house/harness/collar escape make sure you have easily accessible recent pics of your pet.

So let’s make tomorrow “NO TOTO MONDAY” with safe pets that are as calm as we can possibly ask for.

Thanks everyone!!

HAPPY 26th BIRTHDAY TO POVC!!!

That’s just sorta nutty when we really think about it — and the fact that I have several staffers who have been here for all of it and more.

So thank you everyone staff/family; and client/family; and all of the creatures great or small or owned or lost or wild or any combination of the above for giving us these 26 years of loving what we do.

Not sure if I got 26 more in here but as fun as this last 26 have been and as proud as we are of what we are I am sure happy to try!!

Thank you Collins family! Many memories over the last 32 years!

This year as we at POVC wander through 2026 we hope to celebrate our POVC staff members on their work anniversaries and we get to start off with quite a doozy.

Brandi Read has been a member of our support staff for 24 years as of Wednesday February 11th!!

Brandi 🙏🙏THANK YOU🙏🙏 for all of your years of dedication to our clients, their pets, and our mission here at POVC.

For our pic we borrowed “Sir Oto”, a lovely male cat, who was relinquished to our clinic and who is as excited about Brandi‘s anniversary as we all are (as evidenced by him chewing upon our sign 😄)

It is with shared sorrow that we share the passing of one of my mentors for many years, Dr. David Bussan, of Town and Country Animal Hospital.

Dr. Bussan was without question or exception one of the most gentle and kind human beings to grace our profession, and several of us were very fortunate to have worked with him.

His son, Dr. Matt Bussan, continues to carry the family standard at Town and Country and we wish him and his family all of our sympathies.

View Dr. David Nicholas Bussan's obituary, send flowers and sign the guestbook.

Hi POVC Pets and Friends!

This week we have allowed Dr. Fraker and Meredith Fraker to go southwest while the true boss, Linda Sutter, is also taking some much deserved time off this week.

We will be STAFF ONLY today (Monday the 15th) and this Friday afternoon.

We will still do everything possible to help with your pet questions and pet health concerns using our staff and telemedicine if needed.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!!

Whether it’s parrots on shoulder parade, doggies dancing on desks, puppies in playpens, padded pelicans, lovable pitties in pajamas, or furry feline power pet sessions —

All of us at POVC are thankful that this is what meets and greets us every day because of all of you.

From this family to yours—

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Tick season is 12 months a year.

Our larger tick species tend to be a lot more prominent in spring and summer and fade with the cooler weather.

“Deer Ticks” which are heavily implicated in vectoring tick-borne diseases such as Lyme Disease are rolling now and will do so throughout the winter under almost any weather conditions.

They also have a deep attachment that makes them more difficult to remove. I had to set my hand on fire to get this one off.

Ok so that’s not true, but they are not fun to remove.

Keep your tick protection going all year!!!

We have at least four tick borne diseases in central Illinois that affect humans and pets — and as of yet, none of them have been described as “fun” or “pleasant”, so protect yourselves and your pets all winter long!!
