Happy Walk Your Dog Week!

A daily walk is more than just exercise! Regular walks can help your dog maintain a healthy weight, support strong muscles and joints, reduce boredom, and provide important mental stimulation through all those new sights and smells. Plus, it’s a great way to strengthen the bond you share. ❤️

This week, grab the leash and make time for an extra walk—or simply make your usual walk a little longer! 🐕🌳

🐾🌎 WORLD RABIES DAY — SEPTEMBER 28 🌎🐾

🦠 Rabies Is Preventable. Protection Starts With You.

Rabies is a serious and almost always fatal disease that can affect pets, wildlife, and people. The good news? Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect your pet—and your family. ❤️

🐶🐱 Why keep your pet vaccinated?
✔️ Rabies vaccination protects your pet from a deadly disease
✔️ It helps protect your family from potential exposure
✔️ It helps prevent the spread of rabies in our community
✔️ In many areas, rabies vaccination is required by law

🦝 Remember: Even pets who stay indoors can potentially encounter wildlife. Bats, raccoons, skunks, and other wild animals can carry rabies.

💚 A simple vaccine can save a life.

This World Rabies Day, take a moment to check your pet's vaccination records. If you're unsure whether your pet's rabies vaccine is current, give our team a call—we're happy to help!

🐾 As Animal Pain Awareness Month Comes to an End…

September may be coming to a close, but recognizing and managing pain in our pets is important all year long. ❤️

Our pets can’t tell us when something hurts, and many animals instinctively hide signs of pain. Changes in behavior, mobility, appetite, sleep, grooming, or interaction with family can sometimes be subtle clues that something isn’t right.

🐶🐱 Remember: Pain is not simply a normal part of aging, and your pet doesn’t have to “just live with it.”

From arthritis and dental disease to injuries, chronic conditions, and recovery after surgery, there are many ways veterinary medicine can help improve comfort and quality of life.

At Bortell Animal Hospital, our goal is to recognize pain early, determine its underlying cause, and develop an individualized pain-management plan for every patient.

Animal Pain Awareness Month may be ending, but our commitment to keeping your pets comfortable never does. 🐾💚

If you notice changes in your pet’s behavior or mobility, don’t wait. Talk with your veterinary team about whether pain could be playing a role.

Did you know that veterinary teams use pain scoring to help determine how much discomfort your pet may be experiencing?

Pets can’t tell us where—or how badly—they hurt, and many instinctively hide signs of pain. That’s why our veterinary team looks at multiple clues, including:

🔹 Posture & movement – Are they walking differently, limping, or reluctant to move?
🔹 Facial expressions – Changes in eye position, ear placement, or facial tension can indicate discomfort.
🔹 Behavior – Increased hiding, restlessness, irritability, or changes in interaction may be important clues.
🔹 Appetite & activity – Eating less, sleeping more, or losing interest in favorite activities can signal pain.
🔹 Response to touch – Flinching, guarding, or reacting differently when an area is touched can provide valuable information.

📊 Pain scores help us track changes over time and evaluate whether your pet’s pain-management plan is working. A score isn’t based on just one behavior—it’s part of a complete assessment by the veterinary team.

❤️ If you notice a change in your pet’s behavior, movement, appetite, or personality, don’t assume it’s “just getting older.” Pain can often be managed, and recognizing it early can make a significant difference in your pet’s comfort and quality of life.

Your pet may not be able to say “I’m hurting,” but they can show us. We’re here to help you recognize the signs.

🇺🇸🐾 Remembering the Dogs of 9/11 🐾🇺🇸

On September 11, 2001, countless heroes ran toward danger while others were running away—including the brave search-and-rescue dogs who worked tirelessly through the rubble.

These remarkable dogs searched for survivors, located those who were lost, and provided comfort to first responders during some of the darkest days in our nation’s history. They worked alongside their handlers with courage, focus, and an extraordinary bond built on trust.

They searched.
They served.
They comforted.
They never gave up.

Today, we remember the canine heroes of 9/11 and all the working dogs who have served alongside humans in times of crisis.

Their loyalty and bravery remind us of the incredible ways animals can touch—and sometimes save—our lives.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸
