I see the most success with owners who know exactly what their goals are for training their dog. It’s because these owners know what kind of life they want with their dogs and they can stay focused on getting there.

If you’re stuck in the “I just want my dog to stop reacting” line of thinking… try to envision what you want your life with your dog to look like. You may have to think back to why you got your dog in the first place. Was it to go on adventures together? Was it for a camping companion?

Once you know what you’re training for then you’ll have an easier time staying consistent, making time for the tedious training, & persevering through the challenging stuff.

A safe space to train your dog…

I work with a lot of reactive and over excited dogs that struggle with dogs, people, wildlife, bicycles etc. I see a lot of dog owners struggling on how to get practice, exposure, and experience without being overwhelmed by a busy park or neighborhood.

Which is why I wanted to create the Neutral Dog Club. This will give you the opportunity to practice in a controlled environment and help other dog owners do the same.

This is not a training class, it is a group meet up that will be facilitated by Mayhem Dog Training. You must be working with or have worked with a trainer in some manner to attend; you do not need to be my student.

All type of dogs are welcome, even if you’re dog is neutral and you just want to work on other things around distractions.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and I’ve see a few other trainers think this way too…

I’ve always called dog owners who train with me my “clients” but over the years I’ve realized that isn’t really the best way to describe the relationship that I have with those who work with me.

I’m a coach. I’m a teacher. It is so much more than just a one time service.

It’s a support system, it’s a new skill that you have to learn and practice, it’s knowledge that is shared with you.

Some of you may not see it this way, but it’s true. You are more a student than a client.

Join us for a pack walk this spring!

Pack walks are open to community members as long as they follow the rules:

- Dogs must on a leash
- Handlers must have control of their dogs - dog can walk next to you
- No greeting other dogs
- Be kind to others

Reactive dogs are welcome as long as you are working on their neutrality.

This is an opportunity for people to work on neutrality around other dogs safely.

Trying to overcome reactivity on your regular neighborhood or park walks will be an uphill battle.

First, it’s a challenging environment & situation to train in. Your dog’s behavior has already been reinforced many times in your neighborhood or parks you visit for walks. It’s also unpredictable for you, you don’t know when you’ll see a dog. Lots of surprise situations can happen and you aren’t ready for that yet. The other person will always leave before you can work through the reactivity with your dog…because they are on a walk too.

Second, you and your dog probably haven’t mastered the basics (clear markers, loose leash walking) and it’s best to do that in more controlled environments or where you can create space from your dog’s triggers.

Lastly, you have the memory of your usual walks being terrible. You’re tense, you anticipate and you expect reactivity from your dog. You may not even realize it. You need a break from the “normal” walks just as much as your dog.

The normal neighborhood walk or park walk is like level 5 for some dogs and you can’t skip levels 1-4 to get there.

Grooming is essential to your dog’s wellbeing. Poor grooming means discomfort for your dog.

I see a lot of dogs with over grown nails, mats in their fur, and hair covering their eyes.

Most of the time it’s because you dog owners just don’t know how to get your dog more comfortable with grooming so you can do it more consistently. If it becomes easy, it becomes doable.

That’s why I wanted to make an affordable class where folks could learn the basics.

- How to desensitize to the tools
- How to get your dog more comfortable to touching & handling
- How to progress in each step & when to move forward
- How to go slow with more challenging dogs (dogs who dislike touch)

This class is open to all. No matter where you are starting.

The goal of this class is to get you started with at-home grooming, get your dog more comfortable with grooming, and get you more confident handling your dog.
