We are in testing phase for these new foam and biothane dog balls, but we will make a handful available on the black magic dog trainin g website as well.

Meet Buck, a big, handsome XL Bully who joined us for a short-term board-and-train focused on muzzle conditioning, clearer communication, and working through some stubborn behavior. 🖤

Buck occasionally gets into squabbles with his dog friends. Because he is such a large and powerful dog, his owners wanted to start addressing those behaviors while also giving everyone the added “insurance” of a properly fitted muzzle.

A muzzle isn’t a punishment, and it doesn’t mean a dog is bad. When introduced thoughtfully, it’s simply another safety tool—much like a leash, crate, or seat belt. Buck learned that wearing his muzzle predicts good things and doesn’t stop him from walking, training, taking treats, or enjoying life.

During his stay, we worked on:

🐾 Positive, low-stress muzzle conditioning
🐾 Engagement and responsiveness around distractions
🐾 Clearer boundaries and follow-through
🐾 Impulse control around other dogs
🐾 Foundational obedience for safer everyday handling

Leilani is taking on the airport! ✈️🐾

This psychiatric service dog in training recently practiced navigating the sights, sounds, crowds, and unfamiliar surfaces of an airport as she prepares to eventually fly in the cabin with her owner.

Leilani is a “Shepinois”—a German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix—and she isn’t a typical “Fab Four” service-dog breed. But a breed label doesn’t tell us everything about the dog standing in front of us.

After evaluating Leilani, we saw a solid, capable dog underneath her few quirks. Since then, we’ve been working hard to teach her the skills she needs to support her loving owner safely and reliably.

Her airport training includes:

🐾 Staying engaged around crowds and distractions
🐾 Moving calmly through busy public spaces
🐾 Settling quietly for extended periods
🐾 Navigating luggage, elevators, automatic doors, and unusual surfaces
🐾 Practicing the focus and neutrality expected during air travel

Service-dog training isn’t about forcing every dog into the same mold. It’s about evaluating the individual dog honestly, developing the right skills, and preparing the handler-and-dog team to move through the world with greater confidence and independence.

Meet Athena, our very sweet—and very fluffy—August board-and-train puppy. 🖤

Athena is an all-black Newfoundland who came to Black Magic Dog Training for help with house training and foundational obedience. With a consistent potty schedule, attentive supervision, and clear routines, she is now living accident-free and building the habits she’ll need to stay successful at home.

House training is only part of Athena’s program. This gentle giant is also working on engagement, focus, and much-needed impulse control while strengthening her core obedience skills:

Between the premium food, the vet checks, the custom training gear, the dog sport equipment, the show entries, the endless toys that last approximately 47 seconds, and—let's be honest—the third dog bed because the first two weren't quite right?

Yeah. Being a dog mom (slash dog trainer) is expensive.

But here's the thing I tell every client in Seattle, Kent, Maple Valley, and beyond: Training is an investment in your relationship. In your sanity. In their freedom and safety. In waking up and actually enjoying your dog instead of managing them.

Let me be clear about something. 🛑

People see a prong collar or an e-collar on one of my dogs (or client dogs) and suddenly I'm "abusing" them.

That's bu****it.

Here's what they don't see: Arcana launching herself into obedience because she knows the ecollar stim is part of the reward sequence. Grimm working for a decade by my side, healthy and happy despite the fact that he started his story horrifically reactive. Kola choosing engagement with me over aggression every single day. And countless client dogs learning that the world isn't so scary with a stable partner in their lives.

Most of what I do is positive. Treats. Toys. Praise. Play. I love rewarding a good choice.

But ignoring the other three quadrants of learning? Pretending corrections don't exist in nature, in social behavior, or in effective training? That's not kindness. That's ideology over results, and I'm NOT about it.

And more importantly—ignoring the dog in front of you is bu****it.

Some dogs need clear boundaries. Some dogs need pressure and release to understand. Some dogs find treats meaningless but praise and a leash pop changes everything. Your dog doesn't care about your training philosophy. Your dog cares about clarity, safety, and feeling understood.

I use tools because I owe my dogs honest communication. Not because I'm angry. Not because I'm lazy. Because clarity creates confidence, and confidence creates happy dogs.

Stay cool, stay cool, stay cool. 🛑

In this video, my client dog (minding his business and trying to focus during a training walk) is being followed by an off-leash dog whose owner is calling after him in...entirelu in vain. No recall. No control. No accountability.

Here's the hard truth: If your dog cannot be trusted under solid voice control, they should not be off-leash in public. Not because your dog is "bad"—but because it's dangerous for everyone involved. Your dog could run into traffic. Approach a reactive or aggressive dog. Get lost. Freak out someone with a fear of dogs. Or simply create a stressful situation like this one.

I get it. Off-leash freedom is a beautiful goal. Watching your dog run, explore, and exist with full confidence? That's the dream.

But it has to be earned.

When we build rock-solid recall, impulse control, and neutrality, off-leash work becomes safe—not a gamble. My clients don't end up chasing their dogs down the street. They don't have to pray their dog listens when it matters most.
