🐴 The barn teaches you more than how to ride. It teaches you discipline, patience, and the value of hard work.

If I could sit down with my past self on day one of starting my first horse, I’d tell them to slow way down.

We often get so focused on reaching the next milestone that we forget what matters most: relaxation, quality, and real balance. Carrying a rider is a huge shift for a horse, and it takes time to build the strength and confidence they need underneath us.

Groundwork isn’t just something you do for a week before throwing a leg over, it’s the continuous foundation for everything that happens under saddle.

Drop a 🐴 if you’re currently working with a young horse!

There are some things in rescue that you never forget. Some things that stay with you long after you leave the barn, close your eyes, and try to make sense of what you have witnessed. 💔🐴We talk about the slaughter pipeline and the horses who find themselves caught in it, but I often wonder if people truly understand the fear, stress, and suffering these beautiful souls endure.Imagine being a horse. You have no idea why you have been taken from everything familiar. You are transported from place to place, surrounded by unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells. You may be hungry, exhausted, frightened, and confused. You don’t understand what is happening to you or where you are going. All you know is that the world you once knew has disappeared, and you have no control over what happens next. And then there are the mares. The innocent mothers carrying babies who have never had the chance to see the world.Witnessing the loss of an unborn foal is a kind of heartbreak that is difficult to put into words. That tiny, innocent life never had the opportunity to take its first breath, feel the warmth of the sun, run beside its mother, or discover the world it was meant to know.It is heartbreaking. It is devastating. And it is a reminder of just how much these horses endure, often in silence.Horses are sentient beings. They feel fear. They experience stress. They form bonds. They trust. They grieve. They deserve compassion, kindness, and the opportunity to live without fear.At A Place for Peanut, we see the reality of rescue up close. We see the physical wounds, but we also see the emotional scars. We witness the exhaustion, the uncertainty, and the slow, beautiful process of a horse beginning to trust again. And sometimes, we witness things that break our hearts in ways we cannot fully explain. We cannot save every horse, and that is a truth every rescuer carries. But we can keep showing up. We can keep fighting for the ones who have no voice. We can keep offering safety, dignity, and a chance at a different life to those who might otherwise never have one.Every horse deserves to know that their life matters. Every mare deserves compassionate care. And every baby deserves the chance to be born into a world that welcomes them.Behind every horse in the slaughter pipeline is a life, a story, and a soul worthy of saving. They are not disposable. They are not forgotten. And they should never be invisible. Please remember them. Speak for them. Support those working tirelessly to save them.Because sometimes, the greatest thing we can do is be the voice for those who cannot tell us how much they are suffering. With heavy hearts, we keep going. For them. Always. 🤍— A Place for Peanut

Sometimes, the best way to build a bond with your horse is to stop trying so hard. 🤍

Sit in the pasture with no halter, no treats, and no agenda. Just be there. Let them wander over when they’re ready.

Take your time grooming them. Notice where they love to be scratched. Walk somewhere new together and let them stop, look, and explore. Spend time on the ground with quiet cues and soft body language.

And most importantly, learn to listen.

If they’re nervous, be their calm. If they’re having an off day, give them space. If they don’t feel like a ride, that’s okay too.

Trust isn’t built in one perfect training session. It grows in all those little moments when your horse learns, “I’m safe with you.”

Sometimes, that’s the whole secret. Just showing up, being patient, and being present. 🐴💛

What’s one little thing that helped you and your horse become a team?
