Rocky the Bearded Dragon wants y’all to know it’s National Reptile Awareness Day! 🦎💚

And since dogs and cats tend to get most of the attention around here, Rocky thought this was the perfect opportunity to teach us a few things about beardies.

Here are a few fun facts we learned from National Geographic:

🦎 There are actually EIGHT recognized species of bearded dragons.

🥬🪲 Beardies are omnivores. In the wild, they eat insects along with leaves, flowers and fruit.

☀️ They’re native to Australia and prefer warm, dry environments like deserts, savannas and scrublands.

👋 And that little arm wave? It means something! Bearded dragons communicate through body language. A quick head bob can signal dominance, while a slower head bob and arm wave can signal submission.

Their famous “beard” is part of their communication, too. When threatened, they can puff it out to make themselves look bigger.

The longer we work with animals, the more we’re reminded that every species has its own ways of communicating, its own routines and its own very specific needs.

Professional pet sitting isn’t just dogs and cats. Sometimes our clients have scales, spikes…and a whole lot of personality. 💚

Happy National Reptile Awareness Day from Rocky!

Safety Tip #5: Costumes Are Optional

We know. The tiny dinosaur costume is adorable. 🦖 But the most important question is: Does your pet think so too?

Some pets are perfectly comfortable dressing up. Others freeze, hide, paw at the costume or clearly want it removed. If your pet seems uncomfortable, skip it.

A festive bandana, collar or cute Halloween photo setup can still give you the holiday fun without asking your pet to wear something they dislike. Their comfort comes first.

We love our independent thinkers!! It may be National Fetch Day but our pups say it’s not Give the Toy to a Human Day: especially as you threw it away. You can’t disagree with that thinking LOL!

Safety Tip #4: Move the Evening Walk Earlier

Your dog’s normal evening walk may feel very different on Halloween. Costumes, groups of children, decorations and unusual activity can be a lot to process: even for dogs who normally love their walks.

If possible, get that walk in earlier and enjoy a quieter neighborhood before trick-or-treating starts. And on November 1, keep an extra-close eye on the sidewalk and grass for dropped candy or wrappers.
