Houstonians, let's help make Houston a safe habitat for migratory birds.

During Houston Audubon Week, we highlighted some of the incredible birds that call our region home. Today, for World Migratory Bird Day, we’re putting the spotlight on whooping cranes and the journey they make to the Texas coast each winter.

A whooping crane’s first migration is a family trip. Young cranes travel with their parents and remain with them through their first winter before becoming independent. Whooping cranes breed in Canada’s Wood Buffalo National Park and migrate to the Texas coast, relying on coastal wetlands to rest, refuel, and spend the winter.

Through Neighbors for Nature, Houston Zoo brings our community together to protect the places birds depend on. Zoo staff & volunteers recently removed 1,288 pounds of harmful litter from critical whooping crane habitat in Port O’Connor, and removed 2,073 pounds from Houston’s bayous.

You can help, too. Plant locally native species, turn off nonessential lights from 11pm to 6am during migration and join us through Neighbors for Nature. Our city is part of their journey. Let’s help make it a safe place for all birds and wildlife.
