Co•Paw: Central Ohio's Programs for Animal Welfare

Co•Paw: Central Ohio's Programs for Animal Welfare Central Ohio's Programs for Animal Welfare (CO•PAW) provides low-cost veterinary services to under-served communities and rescue groups. Walk-ins welcome.

CO•PAW is designed to provide affordable veterinary services to under-served communities and rescue groups. It is incredibly easy to acquire a pet, but exceptionally difficult to adequately care for one. You can travel to any community across the globe and you will find pets. But what you will not always find is adequate or accessible veterinary care. To us, accessible means accessible to all. Many impoverished areas lack proper resources to care for their residents, both human and animal alike. Those that do have veterinary resources are often faced with the issue of the veterinary facility being priced out of the reach of the local residents. This gets a staggering number of pet owners into the habit of not seeking veterinary care, even in emergencies. For CO•PAW, "adequate" means comprehensive, high quality, and complete. The few veterinary resources that are available to poverty-stricken communities often see incredibly high volumes of patients, oftentimes treating the patients as a herd and using outdated, generic protocols without the supporting diagnostics or proven efficacy. Many clinics geared towards low-income clients frequently lack the capability to perform diagnostics. At CO•PAW, we believe every pet deserves the best, and we strive to bring gold standard treatment to every pet, regardless of financial ability.

Pet food prices have gone the same direction as everything else. Here's how to feed well without the boutique bag. 🥣

1️⃣ Learn the one sentence that matters on the label. Somewhere on the bag is an AAFCO statement — "formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance." That sentence means the food is complete and balanced. A store-brand bag with that statement is nutritionally adequate. A $90 bag without it is not.

2️⃣ Match the life stage. "All life stages," "growth," "maintenance," "senior." A puppy or kitten on adult food is underfed for what their body is doing. This is the one place not to compromise.

3️⃣ Do the price-per-pound math, not the price-per-bag math. The 30lb bag is almost always cheaper per pound than the 12lb.

7️⃣ Watch for manager's-special and damaged-bag racks. Torn bags get marked way down. Check the date, transfer it home immediately.

This week we wrote about how hard it is to get to a vet — the car you don't have, the bus that doesn't run there, the body that can't lift a dog. 🚐

Now imagine there is no address to get to at all.

A local human hospital group came to us with a request: bring veterinary care directly into homeless encampments in Central Ohio.

We said yes. Now we need the vehicle.

What a mobile unit does: vaccines, parasite prevention, wound care, basic exams, pet food, medication, and supplies — delivered to people whose animals are frequently the only reason they're still hanging on. It also lets us reach isolated communities across Central Ohio where there is no veterinarian at all.

People experiencing homelessness are among the most devoted pet owners we encounter, and they are handed the most judgment for it. We're not interested in debating whether they should have a dog. We're interested in that dog's health.

An anonymous supporter is matching every gift to the mobile unit, up to $5,000. Your $25 becomes $50. Your $100 becomes $200.

🔗 Consider donating towards the purchase of our mobile unit at www.copaw.org/donate. Our goal is $18,000.

If money isn't where you are right now — please share this. 💚

We think about this a lot: the appointment isn't the hard part. Getting to it is. 🚗

No car. A bus route that doesn't go there. A cat who becomes a helicopter at the sight of a carrier. A dog who screams in the car. A work schedule with no give. A body that can't lift a 60-pound dog into a back seat. None of that is a small problem, and none of it means you don't care.

Here's what actually helps:

🛏️ Bring something from home. A towel or T-shirt that smells like your house, draped over the carrier, drops a cat's stress noticeably. Free.

🍗 Skip breakfast, bring the good treats. A slightly hungry animal will take food from a stranger. A full one won't. (Unless diabetic — follow vet instructions.)

🚙 Practice the car when nothing's wrong. A few short, pointless drives can change what the car means to your dog.

📞 And this one matters most: tell us before you arrive. If your cat is a fighter, your dog has bitten before, you can't lift them, you need help from the parking lot, English isn't your first language, or you'd rather wait in your car — call and say so. We will plan around it.

추석 잘 보내세요 — happy Chuseok to everyone celebrating this weekend. 🌕

Chuseok is Korea's harvest festival: a time to travel home, share food, and honor the family who came before you. It's one of the biggest travel weekends of the year — which brings us to something worth doing whether or not you're celebrating.

If someone else is caring for your pet while you travel, write a care sheet. Five minutes, costs nothing, and it is the single most useful thing you can leave behind.

Put on it:
📝 Food — brand, exact amount, exact times. "A scoop" means nothing to anyone but you.
📝 Medications — name, dose, time, and how your pet actually takes it. What happens if a dose is missed.
📝 Your vet's name and number, and the nearest 24-hour emergency clinic.
📝 Your phone number, and a backup who can make decisions if you can't be reached.
📝 A dollar limit in writing. "Treat up to $___ without reaching me first." This is the one that matters at 2AM.
📝 Quirks — bolts out the front door, hides under the bed for the first day, cannot be let off leash. Be honest about the bad ones.
📝 A current photo in case they get out.
📝 Microchip number — and confirm right now that the registration has your current phone number. A chip with an old number is just a piece of metal.

Tape it to the fridge. Text a photo to the sitter too.

We're open our normal hours — walk-ins Monday through Thursday, 10AM–3PM.

Somewhere along the way, professional grooming stopped being a service and started being a scorecard. 🌿

Let's put that down.

A dog who has never been to a groomer is not a neglected dog. A cat who has never had a "lion cut" is not a neglected cat. Most animals on this planet, right now, are perfectly healthy and have never been in a grooming salon.

What actually matters is short and cheap:
✅ The coat is free of mats. Brush, comb through, done.
✅ The nails aren't clicking on the floor.
✅ The ears are clean and don't smell.
✅ The skin isn't red, flaky, or raw.
✅ The rear is clean — especially on long-coated animals and seniors.
✅ Teeth are getting some attention- treats, brushing and water additives all help.

That's the list. A slicker brush, a metal comb, and nail clippers are under $30 total, last for years, and cover most of it.

A mat isn't messy hair. It's a tourniquet made of fur. 🌿

Here's what's actually happening under one:

It pulls. A tight mat tugs the skin constantly — every step, every stretch, every time your pet lies down. Low-grade pain that doesn't stop.
It traps moisture. Damp skin gets infected. Hot spots, yeast, and bacterial infections start under mats more often than almost anywhere else.
It hides things. Wounds, lumps, ticks, fleas, and maggots in warm weather.
It restricts. Mats behind the legs and in the armpits limit how an animal moves.

⚠️ Please never cut a mat out with scissors. We say this every year and every year it happens. Skin pulls up into the mat — it tents, it comes with it, and the scissors go through it. Deep wounds that need surgical closure. They happen to careful, loving people trying to help. If a mat has to come off, it comes off with clippers, flat against the skin, never scissors.

What actually prevents them, for about $8 and three minutes:
🧹 A slicker brush and a metal greyhound comb.
🧹 Brush where mats form — behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, behind the back legs, and around the rear.
🧹 The comb is the test: if it passes through to the skin, you're done. If it snags, that's a mat forming.
🧹 Three minutes a day beats an hour on Saturday. Every time.
🧹 Take the collar off sometimes. Mats form under collars constantly.

🐈 Cats too. A cat who has stopped grooming — senior, arthritic, overweight — will mat. Often the first visible sign something hurts.

If your pet is badly matted: don't try to fix it at home, and don't feel bad about it. Come in. It's common and fixable.

Nobody said you have to do all sixteen at once. That rule doesn't exist. Somebody just made it up and now everyone's bleeding. ✂️

The one-nail-a-day method:

1️⃣ Pick a time your dog is already relaxed. After a walk, on the couch, in the evening.
2️⃣ Clip one nail.
3️⃣ Give a treat immediately — within two seconds, not after you put the clippers away.
4️⃣ Stop. That's the whole session.

If your dog already panics at clippers, back all the way up. Just set the clippers on the floor and give a treat. Then touch a paw and give a treat. Then hold the clippers near a paw and give a treat. You are not trimming yet — you're changing what the clippers mean.

⚠️ The quick is the pink blood vessel inside the nail. On white nails you can see it. On black nails you can't — take tiny slivers and look at the cut end each time. When you see a small grey oval in the center, stop. That's the edge.

If you do hit it: it bleeds a lot and looks worse than it is. Press cornstarch or plain flour onto the nail tip for 30 seconds. Seek veterinary care if bleeding does not stop or pain continues.

💡 The more often you trim, the further the quick recedes. It gets easier every time.

If nail trims are the fight in your house — or a groomer just isn't in the budget — here's something that genuinely works. 🐾

Walking your dog on concrete or asphalt files their nails down naturally. A few weeks of regular sidewalk walking and most dogs need dramatically less trimming.

How to make it work:
✅ Concrete and asphalt work. Grass and dirt don't.
✅ Consistency beats distance. Fifteen minutes most days beats one long walk on Sunday.
✅ Rough, older sidewalk works better than a new smooth driveway.

⚠️ Now the part that matters:
🔴 Check the pavement temperature first — every time. Press the back of your hand flat on the asphalt for seven seconds. If you can't hold it, your dog can't stand on it. Paw pads burn fast.
🔴 This mostly files FRONT nails. Dewclaws — the ones up on the inside of the leg — never touch the ground. Those still need trimming. An ignored dewclaw will curl around and grow into the leg. Check monthly.
🔴 This doesn't fix nails that are already too long. If they're curling or splaying the toes outward, cut first. Overgrown nails change how a dog carries weight and their ability to walk comfortably.
🔴 Watch for over-wear. Limping or pink, tender pads means back off a few days.
🔴 Winter: road salt cracks pads. Avoid salted paths and rinse and dry feet after a salted sidewalk walk.

Quick test: stand your dog on a hard floor. Clicking means they're too long.

Tomorrow: how to trim without a wrestling match.
