Join us in wishing our HM, Jenn, a happy 21 YEARS with us at Shelton Vet 🩵

We are so grateful to have her with us, and this practice would truly not be the same without her. She puts in so much work behind the scenes to keep things moving smoothly in the clinic and helping to ensure the best customer experience. Even after 20+ years, she has a strong passion for continued growth and learning, and always encourages our staff members to become the best versions of themselves. She supports us all through the ups and downs and never lets us forget she’s here to help us develop into our potential. Everyone should be so lucky to have a manager like Jenn, but we’re truly blessed to call her ours! 🩵🐾

Heat safety matters for every pet! ☀️ On hot days, make sure your furry family members have plenty of fresh water, access to shade, and time indoors to cool off. A little prevention goes a long way in keeping them safe and comfortable.

🐾Fun Fact Friday🐾: Did you know that dogs can overheat MUCH faster than humans?

Unlike people, dogs can't cool themselves efficiently by sweating. They rely on panting to regulate body temperature, which means the Florida heat and humidity can become dangerous very quickly.

Heatstroke in dogs is a medical emergency and can happen in:
* Hot cars (even with windows cracked)
* Backyards with little shade
* Long walks during peak heat
* Outdoor plays in the sun

Brachycephalic breeds are at increased risk of heat stroke! These breeds include Frenchies, Bulldogs, Pugs, ShihTzus, Pekignese, Boxers, & Boston Terriers. Dogs with thick double coats are also at an increased risk.

Signs of heatstroke:
* Excessive panting
* Bright red gums
* Drooling
* Weakness or stumbling
* Vomiting or diarrhea
* Collapse

Keep pets safe by:
* Always providing fresh water
* Make sure shade is available
* Walk in the early mornings or evenings
* Avoid hot pavement
* Never leave your dog in a parked car

If you suspect heat stroke- move to a cool area, offer cool water (not ice cold), wet the paws and nose (not the fur), and contact your vet immediately.
