when it comes to leash walking you have to start with the basics. loose leash walking seems simple but it’s SO complex. it’s one of the behaviors people struggle to teach the most and it’s because they expect quick, immediate progress or else they feel like they’re training isn’t effective.

here’s some extra things to keep in mind when teaching leash walking:

✨ if your dog is a significant puller and you are not seeing any progress, i would highly recommend considering that pain might be a factor. dogs often walk faster when their body is hurting them because it can put less pressure on certain joints/muscles.

✨ it doesn’t need to be perfect to be success. celebrate small wins, reinforce the small moments you get offered attention or a loose leash. don’t expect perfection.

✨ remember what the point of walks are: for your dog. not for you. let your dog sniff, choose the direction, and sometimes even, pull a little bit!! it’s normal for their to occasionally be tension on the leash when your dog wants access to an exciting smell. being so controlling often increases overall pulling and has the opposite effect you want.

we should want our dogs to walk nicely on their leash because they’ve been taught to, and NOT because pulling leads to discomfort or punishment. that form of training isn’t prioritizing the dogs actually enjoying the walk, which should always be the primary goal.

my sweet, sensitive girl. azula is very dependent on other dogs, mainly harvey. when harvey is with her, she’s happy, carefree and brave. but when she’s by herself, she becomes a very different dog. she’s scared of people, sounds, sudden changes, etc.

it’s been my goal this year to really focus on helping her feel more comfortable when we do solo outings. i don’t share as much about it because a lot of it feels very boring. but i still hope it is helpful to anyone struggling with a fearful, sensitive dog like azula.

the craziest part of this is i tried to catch it and get it out when i first got outside but it would quickly dart away from me, then azula gently caught it with ease and never tried to hurt him 😭

early morning walks are not cutting it for azula right now, so i’m on a mission to find all kinds of different ways to entertain her while we wait for it to cool off more 🫣

she was interested in the fish toys for about 20 minutes then moved on and got bored, overall i wouldn’t rate this very high specifically for Azula, because she moved on pretty quickly. but for some dogs this could be a really great activity!
