This Memorial Day, I’m remembering my uncle, Pvt. Russell R. Kiser of Company A, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Russell was only 19 years old when he was killed in action on February 26, 1945 during the Battle of Corregidor in the Philippines. He was part of the legendary airborne assault where American paratroopers jumped from C-47 aircraft onto the tiny island fortress known as “The Rock.”

The men of the 503rd parachuted into intense enemy fire, cliffs, ruins, and hidden Japanese defenses during one of the most dangerous combat jumps of World War II. Russell survived the jump and continued fighting until he was killed during the brutal battle to reclaim Corregidor.

Nineteen years old. An age when most young men are just beginning to dream about their future. Instead, Russell gave his life fighting for freedom and for generations he would never meet, including me.

I am incredibly proud to call him my uncle. His courage, sacrifice, and service will never be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, please take a moment to remember the brave men and women who never made it home. 🇺🇸❤️
