In less than 24 hours, a coordinated response brought five adult dogs, six puppies, and five cats to IndyHumane—and put them on the path to recovery.

On Tuesday, October 6, our friends at BISSELL Pet Foundation contacted us about animals living in severe conditions in Valparaiso, Indiana. IndyHumane and Porter County Animal Shelter quickly worked with the foundation to coordinate their removal, with our local partner FIDO Indy providing transport.

Now these 16 animals are receiving veterinary care, nutritious meals, grooming, and the comfort and attention they deserve. Our animal care and medical teams will continue to monitor their recovery, and they’ll be available for adoption once medically cleared.

This kind of rapid response is possible because of strong partnerships and people who step forward when animals need help. Thank you to BISSELL Pet Foundation, Porter County Animal Services, FIDO, and our dedicated staff and volunteers for bringing these animals to safety and helping them heal.

🏈 Football Sunday calls for a football-ready Ally!

Ally is dressed for the occasion and wanted to share some notes from her foster family about how she’s been doing!

Since being in a foster home, Ally has really come out of her shell. She’s gone from being nervous around elevators and doors to running, jumping and confidently enjoying her adventures. Her new harness has also made walks a breeze, and her foster says she now walks nicely on leash and is an amazing listener.

She’s friendly with everyone she meets, loves going on adventures with her people and, most importantly, LOVES her cuddles. Her foster says she’s a loyal, loving and sweet companion who is happiest simply being by your side.

Ally is looking for a quieter home where she can continue blossoming with people who will give her the time, patience and love she deserves.

“How do I adopt from IndyHumane?”🐾

We get this question a lot! We know every animal shelter has a different adoption process, so we wanted to break down how it works at IndyHumane.

1️⃣ Browse our adoptable animals
Visit indyhumane.org to see who is currently looking for a home. You can also fill out an adoption application online before you visit!

2️⃣ Save your application for later
Your application can be used for multiple animals, so once you’ve completed one, you don’t need to fill out a new application every time you find another pet you’re interested in.

3️⃣ Come visit us in person
This is an important part of our process! You can apply online ahead of time to save yourself some time at the shelter, but you must visit IndyHumane in person to move forward with an adoption.

Our team does not reach out after you submit an online application. We operate on an in-person adoption process, so come see us when you’re ready to meet your potential new best friend!

4️⃣ Meet your potential match
Once you’re here, our team can facilitate a meet and greet with the animal you’re interested in. If it feels like a good fit for both you and the pet, we can move forward with the adoption!

5️⃣ Take your new best friend home!🏡
You’ll complete the necessary paperwork, pay the adoption fee, grab any supplies you need from our retail store, and then you’re ready to head home together.

What about animals in foster homes?
That process is a little different! You can still apply online, and our team will coordinate a time to bring the foster pet back to IndyHumane so you can meet them.

Through October 8th, adoption fees are WAIVED for every dog over 40 pounds at IndyHumane! Meet a few of the dogs who are ready to head home:

🐾Zaliyah spent the last few months being an amazing mom to her puppies, and now it’s finally her turn. She’s a gentle, affectionate girl who may need a little time to warm up, but once she feels comfortable, she’ll show you just how sweet she can be.

🐾Sasha is a gentle, people-loving lady who is happiest spending time with her favorite humans. Whether it’s a walk, a couch cuddle or simply hanging out together, she’s ready to be your loyal best friend.

🐾Molly may take a little time to feel comfortable, but with patience, kindness and a few treats, her sweet personality starts to shine. She’s currently available through foster-to-adopt while she receives heartworm treatment and is looking for someone who will let her take things at her own pace.

🐾Luna May is equal parts adventure partner and cuddle expert. She loves being with her people, enjoys staying active and would love a home where she can be your one-and-only dog.

🐾Ceniza is a friendly, enthusiastic girl who loves walks, playtime and being part of the action. She’s looking for a family ready to continue working with her on her leash skills and manners, and she’d prefer to be the only dog in the home.

🐾Ally might be a little shy at first, but give her some time and you’ll discover a sweet, friendly girl who loves being close to her people. She’s looking for a patient family who will let her come out of her shell at her own pace.

There’s No Place Like Home. 🐾

Right now, space at IndyHumane is extremely limited, and our big dogs have been slower to find homes. That’s why we’re trying something that can help move more dogs into homes and create room to help additional animals who need us. Through Thursday, October 8, adoption fees are waived for all dogs over 40 lbs at IndyHumane.

Research from Maddie's Fund has found that temporary adoption promotions can significantly increase adoptions, and studies of fee-waived adoptions have found that removing the adoption fee does not necessarily lead to higher return rates or worse outcomes for the animals.

But a waived fee does NOT mean a waived adoption process. Our normal screening and matching process remains in place for every adoption. We still want to make sure each dog is going to a home that is a good fit for them, and that the adopter is prepared for the commitment of bringing a dog home.

Every adoption also includes:
• Spay/neuter
• Microchip
• Vaccines
• Heartworm test + prevention
• 30 days of insurance
• Free vaccines for life at our clinic
• A bag of CUDDLY food
This adoption promotion runs October 1-8, and includes all dogs over 40 lbs.

When a dog finds the right home, it does more than change that dog’s life. It also opens a space for another animal who needs our help. ❤️
