The rescue is home to five GSDs whose owner passed who had no family member or friend able to care for them. Over the years, there have been numerous shepherds whose owners have died and lived their remaining years at the farm.
The weight of responsibility to care for them feels especially important. I imagine how the dogs must feel to lose everything and to their owners watching from spirit, longing to hold them again, watching them sleep at night. If I imagine for too long, I can’t help but cry.
Pictured is Neeko. He was bought in 2021 from a breeder. I won’t mention the breeder but I’ll only reveal that I’ve rescued many of her dogs over the years and they all have the same hips.
In a span of 4 years, Neeko lost both his owners; first his Dad and just a month ago, his Mom.
Neeko came in wearing a beautiful leather collar with an engraved metal bracket with his name and address. How I hate removing their collars. I do this so that they don’t get caught on anything. I feel like their owners are watching me remove the last bit of ownership they have. I always speak to the owners and say this is just for their protection. I’ll give it back. Silly? Maybe but it helps me too.
Neeko needs a loving home. He has been playing with a young female who I’ve named Hope. He’s very good with her but I’ve noticed that he doesn’t like when she tries and apprehend his beloved squeaky balls. This is likely because Neeko was an only dog. He just needs to get used to sharing.
He’s housebroken, a perfect GSD who alerts and barks at strangers but softens when commanded. He’s a long and tall boy. Gorgeous eyes. He should be kept on joint supplements as he has a slightly odd gait (swinging in the rear legs).
I believe he would do great with a female dog companion who is playful and not dominant. Hope is perfect for him because she’s young and hasn’t developed any set common female pack-leader behavior.
