☀️🐶 Summer Means More Adventures... and More Exposure to Respiratory Illness

Summer brings more travel, boarding, grooming appointments, training classes, dog parks, neighborhood walks, family gatherings, and other opportunities for dogs to encounter new environments and other dogs. With increased activity comes an increased risk of exposure to contagious respiratory diseases like Canine Influenza (Dog Flu).

Canine Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory virus that spreads easily between dogs through coughing, sneezing, saliva (kisses & licks!), shared water bowls, contaminated surfaces, and even on clothing or hands after contact with an infected dog. The tricky part? Infected dogs can spread the virus for days before they ever develop symptoms, meaning they may look perfectly healthy while already being contagious.

While many dogs recover, some are at a higher risk of developing more severe illness, including:
🐾 Puppies and younger dogs
🐾 Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds like Frenchies, Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Shih Tzus
🐾 Senior dogs
🐾 Dogs with underlying respiratory or other medical conditions

We especially recommend discussing the CIV vaccine if your dog:
✔ Boards or attends daycare
✔ Visits the groomer
✔ Goes to dog parks or training classes
✔ Travels or spends time around other dogs
✔ Participates in dog sports or community events
✔ Is a puppy or young dog
✔ Is a brachycephalic (short-nosed) breed
✔ Simply enjoys getting out and about with the family

Not every dog has the same lifestyle or risk factors, which is why we tailor our vaccine recommendations to each individual patient.

🔥🐾 Pet Fire Safety Tip: Make Sure First Responders Know Your Pets Are Inside

In an emergency, every second matters. One simple way to help protect your pets is by placing a pet emergency alert decal or window cling in a visible location, such as a front window or door. This alerts firefighters and other emergency responders that pets may be inside the home.

Don't have one? Many pet stores carry emergency alert decals, and you can also request a free Pet Safety Pack, including an emergency alert decal, through the ASPCA. https://secure.aspca.org/take-action/pet-safety-pack

Another important safety tip: If a fire occurs and you can't locate your pet quickly, get yourself and your family to safety immediately. As you exit, leave a safe escape route open for your pet if possible, such as an open door or window. Once outside, stay near the opening if it is safe to do so and continue calling for your pet.

🎆🇺🇸 Fourth of July Is Almost Here! 🇺🇸🎆

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and while we look forward to the celebrations, many of our furry friends may not be quite as excited about the fireworks. 🐶🐱

If your pet experiences anxiety during fireworks season, now is the perfect time to plan ahead! To prescribe any medications, including anti-anxiety medications, we are required to have a current veterinary-patient relationship, which means your pet must have had an exam with us within the last 12 months.

Knowing when your pet needs immediate veterinary care can save their life. Contact a veterinarian right away if your pet is experiencing:

🔴 Difficulty breathing
🔴 Seizures
🔴 Collapse or inability to stand
🔴 Severe bleeding
🔴 Suspected poisoning
🔴 Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
🔴 Signs of extreme pain
🔴 Being hit by a car or other major trauma
🔴 Bloated or swollen abdomen
🔴 Difficulty urinating
