OPEN WIDE! HOW TO DO A COMPLETE CONSCIOUS AND ANESTHETIC ORAL EXAM 🩺

This presentation reviews a systematic approach to the conscious and anesthetized oral evaluation of dogs and cats. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing normal oral anatomy, performing a thorough extraoral and intraoral examination, and accurately documenting findings using the Triadan tooth identification system. Including periodontal disease, tooth resorption, endodontic disease, stomatitis, trauma, and oral neoplasia. Major juvenile findings of developmental abnormalities and persistent deciduous teeth during first exams will be discussed. The presentation will also review the identification and classification of common malocclusions. Attendees will gain a practical framework for performing consistent oral examinations and recognizing abnormalities that warrant further diagnostic investigation or treatment.

Learning Objectives:
🦷 Perform a systematic conscious and anesthetized oral exam in dogs and cats.
🦷 Recognize normal oral anatomy and common dental/oral abnormalities.
🦷Accurately identify and document teeth using the Triadan system.
🦷 Recognize periodontal disease, tooth resorption, endodontic disease, stomatitis, trauma, and oral neoplasia.
🦷Identify juvenile dental abnormalities, including persistent deciduous teeth.
🦷 Identify common malocclusions and recognize findings requiring further diagnostics or treatment.

ECG REVIEW & COMMON ARRHYTHMIAS 🩺

Vigilant patient monitoring is one of the most important ways to maximize patient safety. ECG monitoring offers continuous information about the electrical activity of the heart in real time. Given that many drugs and disease processes can cause alterations in this electrical activity, a basic understanding of what a normal ECG should look like is essential for being able to rapidly identify and treat any potentially dangerous arrhythmias. This lecture reviews the basic parts of the ECG, normal ECGs, and reviews several common arrhythmias with treatments when indicated.

Learning Objectives:
🐾Be able to identify the P-wave, QRS complex, and T wave of a normal ECG
🐾Be able to recognize when parts of the normal ECG are missing
🐾Be able to recognize an abnormal QRS complex
🐾Be able to describe ECG abnormalities accurately
🐾Know what arrhythmias need immediate treatment

Post- Procedure Highlight! ✨

Yoshi suffered from a mandibular (lower jaw) fracture.

Based on the oral exam and the CBCT, it was recommended to perform full-mouth extractions and place Yoshi on a muzzle for 8 weeks to allow the fracture to heal. 🦷

With a little home care, including using the e-collar and providing soft food, Yoshi was able to heal wonderfully!🤍

Mom says Yoshi is doing amazing and that he is back to being his normal happy self! 🥳

"Despite everything, he is still his happy self, wagging his tail like a helicopter and eating solid food without any problems."
