We have a couple of cases of Canine Distemper (CDV) that local dogs contracted from wildlife. Wildlife such as skunks, fox, and raccoons can carry the virus, it can spread in urine, saliva, and f***s from infected wildlife as well as respiratory droplets. There is a very effective vaccine against CDV. Just because we haven’t seen a disease in many years doesn’t mean it isn’t here. Vaccines are very important to protect our pets. Non-vaccinated dogs and puppies are very susceptible to the disease. CDV can cause fever, respiratory disease, GI disease and neurological symptoms. There is no treatment only supportive care, mortality rates in adult dogs is about 50%.
