🐾 What Is Fear Free Medicine? 🐾
Fear Free is an approach to veterinary care that focuses on preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, and stress in our patients. Instead of simply treating an illness or injury, we consider the whole patient—including how they are feeling during their visit.
Why does it matter? When pets are frightened or stressed, veterinary visits can become difficult for everyone. Stress can make it harder for pets to feel comfortable being examined, handled, or treated. It can also affect how they behave and how they respond to their surroundings.
By reducing fear and stress, we can create a more positive experience, build trust with our patients, and help make future visits easier. Most importantly, we want your pet to feel safe and cared for while they are with us.
Fear Free medicine is incorporated into the way we care for our patients—from the moment they walk through our doors. Our team works to:
✨ Create a calm environment by being mindful of noise, smells, and other things that may make pets uncomfortable.
✨ Give pets time to adjust rather than rushing them into an examination. Sometimes a few extra moments to relax can make a big difference.
✨ Use gentle handling techniques and pay close attention to each pet’s body language and comfort level.
✨ Use positive reinforcement such as treats, praise, and rewards to help create positive associations with veterinary care.
✨ Let pets have choices when possible. We may adjust how or where an examination is performed based on what helps that individual patient feel most comfortable.
✨ Individualize every visit. Every pet is different. What works for one patient may not work for another, so we adapt our approach to their unique needs.
✨ Use medications when appropriate. For some pets, additional support is needed to reduce anxiety and make their experience safer and more comfortable. There is no shame in needing a little extra help!
Fear Free care doesn’t mean that every veterinary visit will be completely stress-free. Instead, it means that we are actively looking for ways to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress and make the experience as positive as possible.
At South Baton Rouge Animal Hospital, we want your pet to feel more than just physically healthy—we want them to feel safe, respected, and cared for.
