Brucella canis is a bacterial infection that can affect dogs and has become more common in the UK in recent years, particularly in dogs that have been imported, or travelled abroad. Brucella infections can go on to cause of variety of health problems in dogs, and infected dogs remain infected for life.
Brucella can be spread from dogs to humans. While the risk to most pet owners is very low, veterinary teams have a greater potential for exposure due to the nature of their work.
