This beautiful little friend is Teddy 🥰
Teddy's worried owner rushed him in to see our fantastic vet Aurobind, as he seemed to be choking 😳
On close examination, the poor boy had a piece of a dog chew lodged in his throat!!
The team swiftly got to work removing the chew and luckily Teddy is absolutely fine and already back home with his lovely owners 💚

Several types of popular dog chews carry significant risks for dogs. The most common dangerous chews include rawhide (which poses a high choking and bowel obstruction risk), cooked bones and antlers (which can easily fracture teeth), and sticks
We would always recommend avoiding these things for your precious dogs 🐾

Hot Weather Alert for Pet Owners! 🐾
As we head into what is likely to be a very hot bank holiday weekend, it's important to remember that our dogs feel the heat even more than we do. What might seem like a pleasant summer walk can quickly turn dangerous—or even deadly—for your furry friend.
🔥 Why It’s Risky:
Pavement burns: If the ground is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Asphalt can reach 130°F (54°C) or more on a 90°F (32°C) day.
Heatstroke: Dogs can't sweat like we do. They cool down by panting, which isn't enough in extreme heat. Heatstroke can come on fast and can be fatal.
Dehydration: Long walks in the sun increase the risk of dehydration, especially for flat-faced breeds like pugs and bulldogs.
🚫 Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day (typically 10 AM – 6 PM). Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the pavement and air are cooler.
✅ Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe:
Walk on grass when possible
Always bring water
Keep walks short
Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a minute
Watch for signs of heat stress: heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, or vomiting
Your dog relies on you to keep them safe—let’s make sure summer is fun, not fatal. 🐶💛

Here at Chessington, we understand that there is no "one size fits all"
All of our patients are individuals and we try to tailor the way we handle them to suit their needs 🐾
Little Bruce here needed a thorough examination of his eyes and ears 👁️
Whilst he is the friendliest of boys, he is also a wriggly one 💚
Holding tight and restraining a dog like this would only cause him distress and make him worried about future visits
So we used bribery 😍
Armed with a tube of yummy liver paste, our fantastic nurse Vicki managed to keep him still and distracted - and having a lovely time - whilst the lovely Aurobind carried out everything he needed to
This pup's only worry was how much of the tasty treat he could get in his mouth 🥰

This beautiful little friend is Twinkle 🌟
Twinkle came to see our lovely vet Giulia for a health check so that she could have her flea and worming medication dispensed

We are governed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and vets must conduct a physical examination to prescribe antiparasitics (flea/wormers). Vets typically require a check-up every 12 months to authorise 12 months of treatment 🐾

So, as well as following regulations, we also get to see your little ones for cuddles 🥰

🌱It's that time of year again🌱
It is coming up to grass seed season 😭
Every year we, and all of our wonderful sister branches see lots of poor animals that have fallen victim to the dreaded grass seeds

Grass seeds are a serious, often hidden summer danger to pets, as their sharp, barbed, arrow-shaped structure allows them to easily pierce skin and travel throughout the body, causing infections, abscesses, and deep tissue damage. Common problem areas include paws, ears, eyes, and noses 😦

Paw/Skin Infection: The seed embeds in the skin—often between toes—causing excessive licking, chewing, swelling, or a small, pus-filled hole (abscess).
Ear Problems: Seeds trapped in the ear cause intense head shaking, scratching, or scratching at the ear.
Eye Damage: A seed in the eye can cause intense pain, swelling, and severe corneal damage.
Migration/Internal Damage: Seeds can travel through the body to the lungs, heart, or other organs, leading to life-threatening conditions.
Respiratory Issues: Inhaled seeds cause sudden sneezes, nasal discharge, or coughing.

The only thing we as owners can do is keep our pets away from long grass as much as possible and get in touch with us right away if you notice any of the signs above 🐾

Cats frequently suffer from dental diseases, with roughly 70% developing issues by age three 😦

Common, serious problems include painful tooth resorption (breaking down of tooth structure), periodontal disease from plaque/tartar build up, severe gum inflammation (gingivitis/stomatitis), and fractured teeth. These often lead to chronic pain, tooth loss, and other health issues 🦷
Cats are such strong brave little creatures, they often do not show dental pain, and will continue to eat even with a sore mouth 🐾

Sometimes there are signs that owners will notice such as seeming uncomfortable when eating, suddenly preferring wet food rather than biscuits, a bad smell from the mouth or blood stained saliva. Often there are much more subtle signs that even the most attentive owner may miss

We are very pleased to be able to offer free dental checks at Chessington Vets. You are very welcome to get your little ones booked in and we can have a look at their mouth and teeth and possibly recommend treatment or things you can do at home to help 🥰
Any one of our friendly team will be happy to help 💚
