Please watch for wildlife in need of help when assessing storm debris!

‼️ATTENTION‼️

Yesterday’s big storm caused severe damage all over Essex-County. With one confirmed tornado and a second possible one there is extensive damage everywhere.

When cleaning debris please keep an eye out for wildlife in need of help, baby season is not over! Squirrels are on their second litter of the year, some songbirds are still nesting and other mammals like opossums & Cottontails are also with young. Please also keep an eye out for adults aswell.

Our phones have been ringing off the hook all morning. Our dedicated staff and volunteers are working hard to ensure everything at the centre is running as smoothly as possible. We have also coordinated and set up triage/drop off locations at a few locations around Essex County to stabilize patients before they arrive at the centre.

So far, we have admitted the following, which had storm related injuries:
Squirrels (adults & young of year)
Bats
Mice
Cottontails
Songbirds

Today, we are going to be hit with another severe thunderstorm so make sure to keep eyes open for wildlife that may need our help.

If you come across and injured wildlife please do not feed or give it water, place it in a box and keep the individual warm and in a dark place until it can get to us or one of our responders. To keep wildlife warm you can place a heating pad on low under the box, use a water bottle with warm water and wrap it in a cloth (placed in the box with wildlife), fill a sock with rice and warm it up (placed in the box with wildlife).

Please be patient with us as we navigate through these next couple days filled with chaos. Please only leave one voicemail, do not send Facebook messages/emails regarding injured wildlife (unless instructed otherwise via phone or Facebook post).

Snipe was very displeased that he had to get into a carrier and come in for a rabies vaccine. But you see, he and his feline brother Howard caught a bat. People often think that indoor cats like Snipe don't run any risk of coming into contact with rabies but he's here to tell you that they are incorrect - bats can carry rabies and playing with a bat can expose an indoor cat.

We’re used to having dogs explore our lobby on a leash, but it’s much less common to see cats doing it! Gin and Tonic are some very cool kittens though, so they were were happy to take a few minutes to explore after their booster vaccine appointment. 😻😻

Usually when you think about the benefits of TNR you think about preventing future kittens. But sometimes, the benefits go far beyond population control. They certainly did for this cat, who came to Community Veterinary Clinic today for her spay surgery. While she was under anesthesia we found that she had a severely infected mammary gland, commonly called mastitis. This poor mama had to be in so much pain! But our team was able to provide the treatment she needed along with her spay surgery and she’s now ready for a future free of nursing kittens who could cause the condition to occur again.

We want to send a big thank you to all the members of the community who came together to trap this girl and get her the care she needed. TNR can be a LOT of effort, but stories like this remind us just how much of a difference those efforts make.
