🚨 LEPTOSPIROSIS IN DOGS: WHY IT MATTERS 🚨
Leptospirosis (“Lepto”) is a serious bacterial disease that can cause severe kidney and liver damage in dogs. It can also be transmitted to people, making it an important public health concern.
Many dog owners still believe Lepto only affects rural or hunting dogs. However, current veterinary research shows that dogs of all breeds, sizes, and lifestyles can be exposed. Urban and suburban dogs are also at risk through contact with contaminated water, soil, or urine from wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, mice, and rats.
Common signs include:
🐾 Fever
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Loss of appetite
🐾 Vomiting and diarrhea
🐾 Increased drinking and urination
🐾 Kidney or liver failure
Recent recommendations from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) now support Leptospirosis vaccination for essentially all dogs beginning at 12 weeks of age.
Here in Windsor-Essex, we share our environment with abundant wildlife, including raccoons, skunks, rodents, and other potential carriers. Even dogs that primarily walk in neighborhoods, parks, or backyards may encounter contaminated environments.
💉 Vaccination remains the safest and most effective way to help protect your dog from this potentially life-threatening disease.
If you have questions about whether the Leptospirosis vaccine is appropriate for your dog, speak with your veterinarian.
