Our nurse Hannah spends her weekends caring for neonatal kittens. These kittens are anywhere less than 5 weeks of age and are completely dependant on her because for various reasons they know longer have their mum. Neonatal kittens require true around the clock care, for warmth, feeding and toileting.
๐ก๏ธ๐๐๐ซ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ก ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐ฒ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ : newborn kittens canโt regulate their body temperature until they are about 3 weeks old, so constant monitoring is essential. A soft, clean, heated space, along with room for them to move away when they are too warm is essential. Changing bedding frequently when soiled prevents chills and risk of infection.

๐๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐๐ง๐ญ: newborn kittens typically require feeding every 2-3 hours, including overnight, so true dedication is key! They will reply solely on highly quality milk replacer until they are at least 4 weeks old to help support their immune system and growth.
๐ฑ ๐๐จ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐๐: kittens under 3 weeks of age cannot urinate or defecate on their own as mumma cat would usually lick the area after feeding to encourage toileting so carers need to simulate this by using a warm cloth.
๐ Constant monitoring matters: such young animals can deteriorate quickly and rely on us to keep a close eye on weight, feeding habits, energy, and breathing to pick up any changes and seek help quickly.
