Doing some odd jobs around the place. And thankfully I have stable and well socialised dogs that don’t mind hustle and bustle.
They can deal with change and loud noises - because novelty is normal and natural for them. Something I drilled into them their whole lives.

Is this dog aggressive?

It’s so so important to find a trainer that can read a dogs body language correctly. Many people look at the first clip and assume this dog is aggressive, scared or protecting her owner.

The truth is, this dog is none of those things. And a good trainer can see that straight away. What this dog really is:

Over-aroused
Excited
Frustrated
Unsure

A combination of these things, plus being a German shepherd, means she lunges, barks, and has reactions to other dogs.

When you work with a good trainer you learn how to read and understand your dog better. I have no qualms about letting this dog meet stranger dogs. I specifically told the owner that she would benefit from more social interactions! She is actually incredibly social - a little full-on and rude maybe - but not aggressive, and not out to cause harm.

It’s been three sessions. And this dog has come so far and will continue get further.
But just because a dog is barking and lunging does not ≠ aggression or malicious intent.
Would you be able to tell the difference?

One I hear daily as a dog trainer.

Usually said as an apology when their out of control dog acts out. Or from people who baby their dogs, and excuse their behaviour.

At the end of the day our dogs are animals, with needs like clear structure, consistency, rewards + consequences and appropriate fulfilment.

People are sometimes impressed when they see my dogs. They jokingly say ‘I wish my dog would listen like that!’ and when I tell them they could, they resign immediately because it’s ‘too much work’ or ‘their dog could never do that.’ They’ve already written their dog off!

My structure, my rules, my corrections and my rewards are the best gift I could ever give my dogs. Because it means they get to live like REAL DOGS. Off-leash, socialising, playing, chasing wallabies, freedom, and mental stimulation.

Dogs are only as limited as their owners. Put in the effort. Give your dogs the gift of boundaries, and watch how much more freedom and trust they earn.

Or, of course, maybe just wait for your dog to ‘grow out of it’ 🤷‍♀️🐾
