🐾 Periwinkles’ Journey Back on Her Feet

When Periwinkles first presented to us, she was non-ambulatory and unable to walk.

Advanced imaging with CT revealed a left-sided disc collapse at T13–L1, allowing our team to better understand the problem and carefully plan her surgery.

To assist with precise surgical placement, our team designed and 3D-printed a custom spinal drill guide in-house.

Following surgery and dedicated post-operative care, Periwinkles made an incredible recovery — achieving a complete return of function❤️

Her journey is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when advanced diagnostics, innovative technology, surgical expertise and a dedicated veterinary team come together.

A huge thank you to Periwinkles’ family for trusting us with her care Your trust gave our team the opportunity to explore an advanced surgical solution and support Periwinkles on her journey back to doing what she loves — being on her feet. 🐾

💙 Voting open until Sunday 23rd August 💙
A huge thank you to everyone who has voted for us! 💙

Our team work incredibly hard every day to provide the very best care we can for our patients, and it’s so heartwarming to have that recognised and appreciated by the community.

Thank you for your support, from all of us here at Belconnen Vets. 🐾

It’s Top 5 time! 🐾

Gabi’s dog has inspected the leaderboard, and apparently the results are worth barking about.

There’s still time to show your favourite vet clinic some love and shake up the Top 5.

Brought to you by Monaro Screens.

🔍Case Share: Unexpected CT Finding Leads to Minimally Invasive Foreign Body Removal
A 28 kg Samoyed Merlin was referred to our team for investigation of recent seizure activity. As part of the workup, a CT scan of the brain and body was performed to look for any underlying causes.

While the brain scan identified a lesion requiring further investigation, the whole-body CT also revealed an unexpected finding – a stone sitting within the stomach.
Fortunately, because we have both advanced imaging and endoscopy available on-site, Dr Luke was able to immediately investigate the finding. Endoscopy confirmed the presence of the gastric foreign body, along with moderate oesophagitis and gastritis. Using an endoscopic snare, the stone was successfully removed without the need for invasive surgery.

This case highlights the value of comprehensive diagnostic imaging and having the right equipment and expertise available. What could have become a surgical procedure was instead managed with a minimally invasive approach, resulting in a smooth recovery for the patient.

Merlin recovered uneventfully from anaesthesia and is now continuing treatment while awaiting further assessment of the brain lesion identified on CT.
