Have you noticed more fruit bats around Canberra recently?

There’s a reason…

The warmer months bring increased activity as grey-headed flying foxes travel in search of flowering plants and seasonal fruit. 🌸🍃

Meet the grey-headed flying fox (Pteropus poliocephalus) — one of Australia’s most fascinating native mammals and an important part of our ecosystems.

🪽 Built for life in the skies

With wings that can stretch close to a metre across, grey-headed flying foxes are powerful long-distance flyers.

🌙 A bat with incredible senses

Unlike many smaller bats that use echolocation to hunt insects, fruit bats rely mainly on their excellent eyesight and powerful sense of smell.

Their large eyes help them navigate at night, while their sensitive noses help them locate flowers and ripening fruit.

🌿 Nature’s gardeners

When grey-headed flying foxes feed, they do much more than find a meal. As they travel between plants, they carry pollen between flowers and spread seeds across large distances.

This helps regenerate forests and supports the growth of many native Australian plants.

So next time you see a silhouette gliding across the evening sky…

🐾 4 Subtle Signs Your Pet Might Be In Pain

🐾 5-MINUTE ENRICHMENT CHALLENGE

Spring is a great time to change up your pet’s routine — try one of these simple activities using things you already have at home:

🐶 1. Scatter feeding
- Instead of putting your dog’s meal in a bowl, scatter some of their normal dry food across the lawn and let them find it using their nose. Start with an easy area and gradually make it harder.

📦 2. Treat box
- Place some of your dog’s normal food inside an empty cardboard box. Let them work out how to get it out. Treat this as a supervised activity and remove the cardboard if your dog starts chewing or trying to eat it.

👃 3. Find the food
- Hide 5–10 pieces of your pet’s normal kibble around one room. Start with obvious hiding spots and gradually make them more difficult to find.

🐱 4. Make your pet work for their meal
- Try a puzzle feeder or place small amounts of their normal food in several locations around the house.

🎓 5. Five minutes of training
- Pick one behaviour and practise it for five minutes — sit, touch, stay, come, drop it or going to their bed. Keep sessions short and reward the behaviour you want.

A couple of important points:

✔️ Use part of their normal daily food allowance rather than adding lots of extra treats.
✔️ Start with an easy activity and gradually increase the challenge as they get the hang of it.
✔️ Always supervise new toys, boxes and food puzzles.

🐾 DOG OF THE WEEK – JUNO 🐾

💕 She’s been coming to visit us for years, and we always love seeing her beautiful face walk through the door. Juno is an Irish Wolfhound x Bull Arab, making her a special combination of two very different breeds with some seriously interesting histories!

🇮🇪 The Irish Wolfhound
- The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed from Ireland, with large hound-type dogs recorded as far back as Roman times. In fact, in 391 AD, Roman Consul Quintus Aurelius wrote about receiving seven Irish hounds as a gift, saying they were viewed with wonder in Rome!
- These dogs were originally bred to hunt large game, including deer and, famously, wolves. As wolves gradually disappeared from Ireland, the Irish Wolfhound’s original role as a wolf-hunting breed also faded. The breed was maintained by breeders during the 1800s, helping preserve these magnificent dogs for future generations.
- Today, they're known for their gentle, loyal, dignified personalities. 🐺

🇦🇺 The Bull Arab
- Juno's other half has a much more recent — and distinctly Australian — story! The Bull Arab was developed in Australia in the early 1970s as a purpose-built working dog for hunting wild pigs.
- Early breeders combined the English Bull Terrier for strength and determination, the Greyhound for speed and sight, and the German Shorthaired Pointer for scenting ability.
- The result was a strong, athletic Australian working dog. 🇦🇺

So, Juno is essentially a little piece of ancient Ireland meets 1970s Australia — We think she's pretty special… although after all these years, we're not sure Juno realises just how famous she is around here! 🐶💕

🐱 MEET THE TILCAYO — A BRAND-NEW WILD CAT SPECIES!

You may have seen this little face popping up in the news lately… and there’s a pretty incredible story behind it. Scientists have formally described a new species of wild cat from the cloud forests of Bolivia — the tilcayo (Leopardus tilcayo). But this isn't a newly evolved cat… its evolutionary lineage goes back around 1.4 million years! 🧬🐱

What makes the story even more fascinating is that the tilcayo was hiding in plain sight. A small spotted kitten found in Bolivia's Yungas region was initially thought to be a domestic cat, before researchers realised something didn't quite fit. Genetic analysis of 38 cats, including museum specimens, revealed that what scientists had previously grouped together as tiger cats actually represented five distinct species — including the newly described tilcayo.

And now comes the big mystery… how many are actually out there? 🌿 Only two individual tilcayos have so far been documented closely enough for genetic confirmation, but that does not mean there are only two left. Researchers simply don't yet know the wild population size. Camera traps and further genetic studies are now helping scientists piece together the story of this elusive little cat — a great reminder that even in 2026, there are still remarkable discoveries hiding in the natural world. 🔬🐾

🍋 Meet Lemon! 🖤🤍

Lemon is a Domestic Shorthair — but what exactly does that mean?

Domestic Shorthair isn’t actually a specific breed. It’s a broad term for short-haired cats without a recognised pedigree.

Originally, cats were welcomed around early farming settlements because they helped control mice and other pests. As people began travelling and trading, cats became little world travellers too, hopping aboard ships to new places. Along the way, they met and mixed with other cat populations, helping create the wonderfully diverse Domestic Shorthairs we know and love today.

And that’s why Domestic Shorthairs come in SO many different looks!

🧡 Ginger
🐯 Tabby
🐢 Tortoiseshell
🧡🖤🤍 Calico
🎩 Black & white / tuxedo
…and countless combinations!

You might see a Domestic Shorthair that looks like a Siamese, British Shorthair or another pedigree breed — but looks alone don’t determine that ancestry. Most Domestic Shorthairs simply have wonderfully diverse domestic-cat genetics passed down through generations.
