A story shared by one of our awesome clients, Kathy & her dog, Beau:
Beau, the Moose, and the Training that Made All the Difference
Beau is a two-year-old rescue dog who completed obedience training last year with Front Range K9 Academy in Wheat Ridge. This spring, I wanted to start taking Beau on mountain walks and hikes where he could safely enjoy the freedom of being off leash while still staying close to me. That led me to enroll in their e-collar training program.
To be honest, I was nervous at first. I worried that e-collar training meant shocking a dog into obedience, and that was absolutely not what I wanted for Beau or our outdoor adventures together.
What I discovered was completely different from what I expected. The training focused on communication, safety, and trust. The collar uses vibration and stimulation to redirect attention, not punish. Meg Poinsett, our trainer, was incredibly patient and compassionate throughout the process. She even had me experience vibration and stimulation myself so I could fully understand what Beau would feel. That immediately put my mind at ease.
Then came the moment when the training truly proved itself.
Shortly after training, I stayed in Grand Lake with Beau. Around 7 p.m., I took him outside to go to the bathroom. He was wearing his e-collar off leash while I carried the remote. We were walking quietly down the street, about 12 feet apart, when Beau suddenly froze and stared intently ahead.
As I walked closer, I realized he was locked eye-to-eye with a very large moose standing near the street. The moose was staring right back at him.
I instantly panicked. I backed away and called Beau to come, but he was completely fixated on the moose and too distracted to respond. At that moment, I used the remote exactly as we had practiced in training. Beau immediately broke his focus, turned away from the moose, trotted directly back to me, and sat calmly in front of me โ just as he had been trained to do.
Danger avoided.
That moment changed everything for me. The training didnโt just teach Beau obedience โ it gave me confidence, peace of mind, and a safer way for us to enjoy the outdoors together. I now feel much more comfortable taking Beau on off-leash hikes and walks where permitted, knowing we have a reliable way to communicate even in unexpected situations.
I highly recommend the e-collar training at Front Range K9 Academy to anyone who wants a safer, more confident experience with their dog both on and off the trail.
Thanks, Kathy
