We all have expectations of what a dog should do. But we forget that our dogs do not come pre-programed. We must teach our dogs to be and do what we desire. Let me help you teach so that you and your dog can share a happy long life together!

Over my 14 year training career I’ve worked with thousands of complicated dogs and their guardians. If I could give you one thing that you could work on right this moment is to accept who your dog is for better or worse. Do I love all of the behaviors that my dogs display no. Do I love when they embarrass me in public no. Do I love them for who they are, yes.

It never gets old.
Seeing how happy well matched dogs can be during and after a play session!
Spicy came to meet Rosie and help with training but they really hit it off so they got lots of play breaks!

Do the long leashes get in the way? Sure but at a public park with leash laws and a young dog without a reliable recall, they are worth the hassle and honestly the dogs don’t care!

Bunnies feelings were high this day 😅

The shake off is like a nice deep breath/reset combo for our dogs. It’s especially important to notice and reward for dogs who struggle with over stimulation and reactivity.

The more they can shake off the better emotional regulation you will see!

Tug is such a great game to play with your dogs but I teach it with rules so that I can play with them while are reinforcing healthy behavior patterns.

1. Cue your dog to sit or lay down
2. Present the toy and use a release word
3. Play and have a good time with your dog
4. Prompt them to drop the toy with a verbal cue and treat
5. Repeat steps 1-4

I saw a thread lately where a girl was just complaining about how bad her dog did and the vet and how much it embarrassed her. While I have some empathy I also think we as guardians need to take responsibility for the things our dogs struggle with and work to help them cope better.

I know so many veterinary professionals that are burnt out because owners just expect them to get things done even when the dog is really struggling.

Put the time and effort into helping your dog cope, it will make everyone’s life so much easier.

Spicy definitely cares about and notices small animals. She has been known to try and chase them. Because I really don’t want her to engage in the predatory chasing I’ve worked a lot of rewarding her when she can look away and setting her up for success.

Waylon on the other hand could care less about small animals 😅

If your dog can not calmly watch I would suggest:
Keeping the leash short
Moving as quickly as you can away
Do multiple find its to help them move on

If your struggling with your dogs prey drive I did a whole podcast episode on the topic, let me know in the comments and I’ll dm you the link to listen!

Your dogs tail can give you so much insight into how they are feeling. It is so much more than a wagging tail. Is it:
Wagging?
Flagging?
Freezing?
High?
Low?
Neutral?

That tail needs to be read in context with the rest of your dogs body language but it can provide so much insight!

I have a free course all about your dogs body language, if you’d like to learn more let me know in the comments and I’ll DM you the link to join!
