We got the news that no dog guardian wants this week.
Waylon has cancer 💔
We are still learning about the grade and what will be our best chance at treatment.
I’m doing my best to stay optimistic.
This dog has had a profound impact on me and I am going to do everything in my power to help him beat the cancer and hopefully get to live to be a very old dog.
He honestly is still his happy self which makes it so much easier to believe we can get him through this.
Please send my boy healing energy ❤️‍🩹
And also, f**k cancer.

There are plenty of dog trainers out there that will take your money take your dog and say that they’re gonna do the training for you. I’m not saying that that doesn’t work sometimes but by enlarge there is gonna be zero replacement for you doing the training with your dog. Your dog needs you. You need to be a consistent participant. You need to bond with them. You need to be able to communicate with them and that is really what’s gonna lead to lasting success.

When it comes to leash training for puppies, it’s really all on you as the guardian. You need to set your puppy up for success. You need to help keep that leash loose. You need to reward them for desirable behavior and you need to let them sniff and just be a puppy. More formal leash skills can come when they’re older but at this stage in the game, it’s really on you..

Agency is a fiercely powerful tool, especially when it comes to teaching our dogs to participate in things they don’t like.

Waylon has a trained consent in care protocol where he knows how to clearly say yes you can keep going and how he also knows how to clearly say no you cannot proceed.

While group classes can be helpful for modifying behavior, particularly for leash reactivity over my training career I have really always just taken behavior modification sessions to the dogs neighborhood where they’re struggling the most, because not only do they get the opportunity to practice and rehearse the more desirable behavior, which is not lunging and barking, but they also get the chance to practice it in the environment where they struggle the most.

Oversimplification definitely goes viral when it comes to dog training, especially on this app, but I wanted to set the record straight that while training can be extremely valuable and I think that all dogs deserve training. It does not mean that your dog will never do things you don’t want them to do ever again. Dogs are not robots that can be programmed. They are living breathing dynamic creatures just like we are and in turn their behavior is not always going to be the same. While we train and we try and generalize. It does not always generalize to the crazy circumstances and environment we might have our dogs in so I really just wanted to shine a light today on the fact that while Spicy can be really good and her prey drive has come a long way. It is not perfect and also shout out to Waylon who is a perfect angel who does not chase squirrels or ptarmigans, and I love him for that.
