Little Biscuit is doing great this morning! She’s still not eating on her own, but she’s getting steadier.

Yesterday was hard. We were facing 3 kittens that were just not thriving like typical kittens do. And we got devastating news and unfortunately eventually made the decision to help these little ones cross the rainbow bridge so they do not know a day of suffering.

I wanted to share important education about megaesophagus, but I also want to remind everyone that the foster is grieving so any negativity will not be tolerated in our comments. Our purpose is to educate. And maybe, just maybe, we can convince one more person to SPAY OR NEUTER their unfixed cat so that way kittens like this don’t have to suffer.

Megaesophagus is extremely rare in cats, in fact it only occurs in 1% of the population, so for this to hit 75% of the litter is like winning the world’s worst lottery.

Signs & symptoms- The primary symptom is passive regurgitation, which puts these cats at severe risk of aspiration pneumonia. Eating like a goldfish, quick, ravenous feeding, and then almost immediately regurgitating. Also having trouble swallowing and dropping food out of their mouths frequently. Not gaining weight. Frequent crying. 💔

The kittens spent all day at the vet yesterday and had blood work, a swallow study (a series of barium X-rays), and an exam, and health testing to get to this diagnosis. The vet said it would only have a 10% survival rate at best. Most likely cause is bad genetics and inbreeding. To even get to that 10% chance of survival, they'd need to be held upright for hours after each meal, have special diets, and see expensive specialists. They typically die from aspiration pneumonia which is similar to drowning and absolutely miserable. So yesterday we broke our hearts so theirs don’t ever know anything but love, happiness, and care.

The veterinary care for yesterday was very expensive. ❤️‍🩹 We’re asking for donations to help offset the costs.

Meet Biscuit, this little WOBBLY queen is quite sick. She saw our vet today who is pretty sure it’s probably just a URI and CH (CH, or Cerebellar Hypoplasia, is a neurological condition in which a kitten is born with an underdeveloped cerebellum—the part of the brain responsible for balance, coordination, and fine motor skills. Often called “Wobbly Cat Syndrome,” it is harmless, painless, and does not get worse over time. And if you’ve visited or shelter you’ve likely met our other severely wobbly lady, Gammy) but she’ll still get a cocktail of medications that will do double duty and help her really bad URI and any potential illness or injury that could exhibit like CH.

Wobbly kiddos require a lot of extra support. Especially when it’s a pretty severe case and they’re still learning how to use their body. Luckily for this kiddo, we’ve walked this path before, but every story is different and we’re excited to watch her write her own story.

This Wednesday, we are in desperate need of wet food! We are running EXTREMELY low on our wet food stock at the shelter, and for the sixth month in a row, unfortunately our rescue food distribution has gotten no wet food or dry food in. Please help us stock up on wet food!! This is our wishlist specifically for wet food, but literally any brand, flavor, or amount is SO helpful! Even if you just have a few leftover, unexpired cans your kitties won’t eat, we will take those too!
