🇺🇸🐾 SEPTEMBER 11 — WE REMEMBER 🐾🇺🇸
Families lost loved ones, communities were forever changed, and countless heroes stepped forward to help.
Among those heroes were search-and-rescue dogs.
In the days and weeks following the attacks, hundreds of highly trained dogs worked side by side with their handlers at Ground Zero and other affected locations. These dogs searched through mountains of twisted steel and rubble, using their incredible sense of smell to locate people who might still be alive and, heartbreakingly, to help recover those who did not survive.
They worked in conditions that were frightening and unfamiliar — surrounded by smoke, dust, debris, noise, and exhaustion. Yet they continued to do what they had been trained to do: search, serve, and stay beside their person.
For their handlers, these dogs were more than working animals. They were partners. They were companions. They were a source of strength during unimaginable circumstances.
Some dogs searched for hours at a time. Others were brought in as therapy dogs, offering comfort to firefighters, police officers, rescue workers, survivors, and families. Sometimes, simply having a dog nearby provided a moment of peace in the middle of overwhelming grief.
As a veterinary clinic, we have a special appreciation for the bond between people and animals. We see every day the loyalty, courage, trust, and unconditional love that animals can give us. The dogs who served after 9/11 showed those qualities in extraordinary ways.
Today, we remember the people who were lost, the first responders who gave everything, the families who were left behind, and the four-legged heroes who stood beside them.
We will never forget their courage.
We will never forget their service.
🇺🇸 We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🐾
